Disallowing certain attachments in exchange server?

I am new to exchange, so please don't flame me. I cannot find a way to block users from sending / receiving files by file type. I can only find a way to do it by size. I would like to prevent users from sending / receiving things like java script or visual basic applets, and also things like batch files. The reason I want to do this... The boss asked for it.

We have not implemented exchange server yet, but are planning to replace our existing system, which does file type filtering of attachments, in the next couple of months.

Anyone who can help will instantly become my hero. (Not that that will be much incentive, but that and my undying gratitude are all I have to offer.)

Thanks!🙂

I was looking for the same thing, and I spent a long time at it, but I never figured out how to do it.

What I did was get Symantec Antivirus/Filtering for Exchange, and it's an easy variable to set within that.

Another way to do it would be if you have Outlook XP on all the machines, there is a registry key that you can set to disallow or allow certain extensions. By default I think it blocks Access files and a couple other things, so if you search for "oulook block access mdb" you should be able to find where the key is, it's a pretty common thing.

Sorry I couldn't tell you a quick easy way to do it with just Exchange, but I never figured that out. (If it's even possible)
