Disabling the Firewall in Windows XP Pro..?

How can I go about disabling the built-in firewall on my Windows Xp Pro OS? I ask this because me and my friend want to play Unreal Tournament, using my computer as the host.. but we can't achieve this, as I have a firewall, thus preventing him from accessing my computer externally. My ISP is Shaw@home.


If more info is needed.. just ask.

Control panel/internet connections/right click your network connection/properties/Advanced/ remove checkmark

Are you sure you selected the internat connection you are trying to use? Is there more than one. Here are the instructions straight from microsoft
"To enable or disable Internet Connection Firewall
Open Network Connections
Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select one of the following:
To enable Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), select the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.
To disable Internet Connection Firewall, clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box."

Yeah.. they're both un-checked.. my friend says when I enter my UT Sever, the ip is something like unreal://0.00.00.7 , when it's actually suppose to be something like this: unreal://24.87.45.13

Have you tried looking in msconfig in startup, and or services?

ill do some thinking, but in the mean time... have you tried any other MP games? perhaps UT is the problem

Open up your command prompt and type:

netstat -a

This should give you a good idea whether or not your firewall is still up. If the majority of your ports are "listening" or idle ":*:", then your firewall is down. XP's firewall is garbage, and sometimes has problems.

If you find that your firewall is down, then it is your game that's screwed.

My DSL-ISP doesn't like the XP Pro firewall either, as it disconnects me all the time which is very irritating to say the least. When you open up your connection in it will say on the details of the connection whether it is firewalled or not. At least it does for me.

Go into Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. In the list of services, look for the Firewall service (I don't remember the correct name for it, but you'll figure out which one it is). Change the properties for the service and set it to DISABLE on startup. It will no longer be running.

Get a copy of Sandra 2002 and run it -- it will point out a half dozen or more services that can safely be disabled that will help optimize performance on your system.
