Disabling the 'Enter Windows Password' box ??

Hi guys,

I've just flipped my AT@T cable service over from excite to the ATTBI service, following their automatic network update program, and the darned thing has made the Windows Logon password box keep appearing. Whats with that? I check my network properties and try switching from Microsoft Logon to Family Logon a few times, hoping to reset it, but the thing just wont go away. I always assumed Microsoft Logon would NOT require the password box to appear. The box even says ' Tip, leave the password field blank and you will not be prompted again...' Sure, that would be nice if it was true. Rebooted, switched off a few time... no help.

Anyone got any suggestions for me to get rid of this Prompt? I am running 98SE on my home p.c. and definitely do NOT want to be prompted for username every time...

Thanks.

You need a little program called Tweak UI by microsoft. It allows you to automatically log on. Do a search at microsoft.com or fileworld.com

If you had a password, reset it to nothing and it should go away. Or, use TweakUI. WHich one is easier is debatable. And you want "windows login" not the family one.

Blstriker and Zach Thanks for your help.
Unfortunately there must be something screwed-up in my registry that is forcing the Username prompt to keep appearing.
I've tried Tweakui, specifying Auto-logon using my Username without specifying a password. Still prompts for it every time.
Even followed the instructions on the microsoft knowledge base and that , surprisingly, didnt work either.
Anyone know what keys or values might be screwed-up in my registry, or, any way to fix this annoying problem?
Appreciate any help.

When the windows log on box comes up, highlight the username and hit delete then hit enter. That should keep it from coming back.

Did as you suggested Speed01, but it then says 'You forgot to enter your username, hit return to enter it now'. So all I can do then is to close the window by clicking the x. And I also tried it with Tweakui auto-Logon turned off but no help.

Try to change it to the Windows Family Login, then delete *.pwl in your windows folder (Password lists). You might have to re-set a few details in your config but not many. Caveat: This only works in Win9x/ME, not in NT/XP.

I give up. Something is badly screwed-up with this crappy system of mine. I blame that auto-transition code of AT&T's. Tried changing to and from Microsoft Family login, deleting .pwl's etc - thanks for the advice Garion. Still no way around this crazy dialog box. For some reason, the 'Change windows password' option is never available to me, even after setting up a new password ( & verifying it) at Logon time.

Maybe AT&T have set themselves up as the Administrator for my home p.c - that would explain all these problems?

No, they wouldn't mess with things like that.

I think it's time to uninstall all your network protocols, then the adapters and services. Re-install it all and see if it helps.
