Disabling Java in Internet Explorer: No easy task

Java-proofing IE is most straightforward via Group Policy. It can also be disabled on a zone-by-zone basis (you can leave it enabled for your Intranet if you use it in-house, or for Trusted Sites if you need it just for, say, your bank's website).

At one time, the necessary radio-button "master switch" for Java was present in the Internet Options panel, but at some point it got removed.

Anyway, for those of you with a Pro/Ultimate/Enterprise version of Windows, fire up gpedit.msc (with elevated Admin privileges) and you're looking for this:

Disable it for whatever zones you want (and the corresponding Lockdown zone as well). But first ask yourself if you really need it at all, and if not... uninstall the whole thing and be done with it.
