Disabling Internet on Unlocked Iphone

Long time since I posted here...

If I buy an iPhone off ebay, unlock it/jailbreak it... is it possible to disable 'automatic' 3G access and simply use WiFi? I don't want to incur charges for accessing the internet.

If that's the case, can I connect to my school's wireless network which uses "802.11x" (this is the standard name, x is not a variable)

In my iPhone 3g General settings under the network option, I can slide a switch that reads "enable 3g" to off.

Unfortunately, I do not see an option to turn off connecting to the older EDGE.

HOWEVER, when you're within range of wifi that you've used before, the phones default setting automatically connects to the wifi for you rather than using edge or 3g.

Basically, it looks like everything will work out just fine for you

If you turn off "Data Roaming" (settings -> general -> network) then it won't access data by itself. But it will still try to pull if you access something (like a webpage) that requests data.

On Jailbroken phones, the BossTool has an EDGE disable that works by turning of the service within the OS itself. So it kills EDGE completely, thoroughly and forever. I used this when I was travelling through Europe a few weeks ago to make sure that I didn't accidently pull data while, for example, checking my email offline. WiFi still works fine, but EDGE is completely dead.

Edit: Bosstool has been ported to 2.0, so it's in the installer again.
