Can you name any? There's a difference between something that is useless and something you don't understand.

On a stand-alone, Messenger Service is useless wihich runs by default until it's disabled. I think the OP is talking about services like this one.

The messenger service is disabled by default on XP SP2. And the service does have its uses.
It certainly does 🙂

net send /domain:lss There's leftover cake in the conference room! 😵

*sounds of people hurrying down the hallway*

😀

lol that, and you can tell who is logged onto a machine using nbtstat when that service is started.

Right now, I'm running a Win2k machine and had to disable Messenger Svc. On another rig, it I originally had WinXP SP1 and I had to disable it.

As I said, though, on a *stand-alone*, Mess. Svc. is useless - but for users on the local subnet that belong to the specified domain, of course you need Mess. Svc. to run netsend.

BTW, thanks for the info that it's disabled by default on WinXP SP2.
