Disabled print spooling, now no printer?

Recently I tried to minimize the background services that were running while using Windows XP Pro. For some reason, now my PC will not support Plug-N-Play printers and if I try to "Add a New Printer", I get an error message saying that "Print Spooler is not running" and it refuses to let me.

What can I do?

I tried doing that, but under "msconfig" the box next to "Print Spooling" appears to have a check mark in the box, as though it has already been enabled.

How can I change to manual control? I'm a little puzzled since I really do not understand how I could turn on/off the PNP printer recognition.

???

Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services

Make sure print spooling is set to Automatic and is started. Then, stop fiddling with services. You're not going to make a noticable performance difference.

Thanks! I will cease fiddling as well, you're right ;)

I optimized mind down to 26 processes running on boot, it made a VERY small difference in benchmark CPU tests but it does speed up boot up, thats about it

Ah, - Don't stop fiddling too much - you won't learn anything by just sitting and staring at a stock installation of XP Home!!!!

Come on Werk, we all made mistakes [sometimes quite major ones, sometimes little ones that got us boggled for several days]. What would we do without Anandtech
