well.. I'm shocked that people still think that moving every little write as possible off the SSD is still needed. lol

How many have you and your buddies burnt out so far? ;)

It should be noted that the gains I see are cumulative across a wider 6 drive array and aren't quite as pronuonced on single drives(unless fragmentation levels are higher or the bitmap is spread out badly) but as soon as I started heavily testing Tony-Trim over a year ago the potential gain became quite obvious.

Since the "pronounced" gains are only ~1%, is it worth shortening the life of the SSD to do this?

I'll take a 1% performance gain over .0001% of life loss any day. Is why I tweak and optimize Windows and also why I spent so much cash on faster SSD arrays in the first place.

People also buy optional higher horsepower engines for cars too. That certainly does nothing for lifespan of the drivetrian components either but doesn't seem to stop most from wanting that last little bit of performance.

To me it's like buying a $995 intel Extreme! CPU instead of just a 2500K or 2600K -- the jump from platters to SSD is huge, this tweaking and life-shortening to wring out an extra 1% on top of that seems like a waste of effort.

But if you enjoy the tweaking enough to spend the extra time and money, don't let me stop your fun.

I'm more lazy and just want to build a PC and use it, spending the minimum effort to have it do what I want it to.

yes but we're anal like that . to squeeze every last inch and then some - is worth it. it's okay to be that 0.0001% of the crowd - the super geek. In moderation ;)

anyways contig -> defrag files or dirs but no compacting.
compact -> compress files on a per file basis

So uh guys...back on topic here.

I just checked today and it looks like something is still causing Windows to run defragmentations. The most recent one was run this morning. I've disabled Norton's "Idle time optimizer" so I'm not sure what's causing defragmentations to be run on my drives. More importantly, how do I stop this?

Edit: I've disabled defragmenter altogether. Will this prevent my SSD from being defragged by any outside program (like Norton)?
