If I got 512MB of RAM running win 9x...should I just disable the virtual mem...or should I make it smaller...like 128MB?

with win9x, and jus 512, i wouldnt disable paging... but wont hurt to try, just disable it for awhile, do what you normally do, and if it freezes, reboots, or anything else doesnt work properly, then jus flip it back on... good luck..

I agree with neutralfx. With 512MB, IE and most games will run ok. But remember, Win 9x is notorious at being poor with memory control.:(

Best advice i've seen is to leave VM (they say Win doesn't like to have VM disabled) enabled but make a fixed length swap file--set both VM values to 128MB, that should be plenty.

You should not disable Virtual Memory. There are certain programs that MUST use virtual memory, and will not work correctly without it.

Under Win98(SE), I usually let Windows manage it and leave it as a dynamic swap file. I'm not too concerned about loss of performance. Make sure that you have the ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 under the [386Enh] section of system.ini to maximise the use of physical RAM.

If you have 512MB of RAM, remember to make the adjustment to vcache to prevent Out of Memory Errors.

Again, eit system.ini....here is an example of what to set:

Under the [vcache] section, add the entries
MinFileCache=102400
MaxFileCache=102400
