"disable" video cards on board heatsink/fan?

I've got an older agp video card (Nvidia 7600 series by sapphire I believe) which had a small heatsink and fan attached. The fan no longer functions and actually heats up (I presume due to it trying to rotate unsuccessfully). I took an old northbridge heatsink + fan and attached it to the gpu, then plugged this "new" fan into a 3 pin header on the motherboard. I unplugged the stock fan from the video board but discovered that the video card would not send out a signal with the stock fan unplugged. So I plugged the stock fan back in and just let it hang off to the side. Everything works fine, except the stock fan heats up over time and I'm worried that it might cause a problem later on.

Can I somehow disconnect the old stock fan from the video board and electronically trick the board into thinking it's still hooked up?

How about getting an adapter for the new 3 pin fan to 2 pin and use that to plug into the video card fan power 2 pin plug (that is if there is one).
 
Thanks, I hadn't thought of that. However, the 2 pin plug on the video board is itsy bitsy and I'm wondering if it's proprietary. I've never seen a 3 pin to 2 pin adapter but I've never looked for one before either. Anyone know how common these are and where I could get one?
