Disable DHCP in Win2k server to add ISDN router (for shared internet access)? plus more....

Hi everyone,
I'm going to be adding an ISDN Lam Modem (3com OfficeConnect LAN Modem model 3C892) to a company's existing LAN so that they can share internet access. ISDN is the only type they can have due to their location. They have about 15 PC workstations connected via a 24 port switch and a Windows 2000 server that is configured as a DHCP server. The workstations are all being assigned dynamic ip addresses from the server. I've got several questions (well, maybe more than that...) and I'm hoping someone can help.

1. To share internet access, can I leave the server as a DHCP server, give the router a static IP address and just configure each workstation with this IP address as the gateway and DNS? Will that do it?

2. Or, do I HAVE to disable the server's DHCP and enable the DHCP on the router?

3. If I do have to disable DHCP on the server, can I just disable it, enable it on the router and renew addresses on all the workstations without turning anything off or disconnecting anything?

4. Since 3Com recommends that you hook the router directly to a single PC for initial configuration, and since the only PC anywhere remotely near the ISDN wall jack is the server, can I use the server to configure the router or will the server immediately assign an ip address to the router and stop me from configuring it properly?

6. Here is my plan as of right now (assuming I have to use the router for DHCP)...will it work and am I overlooking something?

Disconnect the server from the LAN
Disable DHCP on the server and make it a client
Connect the LanModem directly to the server's NIC
Configure the LanModem and make it a DHCP server
Connect the LanModem to the switch
Renew all the workstation IP addresses
Reconnect the server and renew it's IP address
Get on the internet from a workstation

Thank you in advance. Especially because I know this is long!

HI:

This is what u need to do, 3com recommends that you hook the router directly to a single PC for initial configuration because u need to install
a software that comes with the router and that software works with a serial cable and that's for initial configuration only(at least that's how it works with
Impact IQ ISDN modems and somthing u have to know is if this router works like the Impact IQ ISDN modems if there is any electricla surge or blackout
the modems at least lost the configuration).

1) don't disable the DHCP in the 2K server
2) give a static ip address to the router
3) add the router ip address to the global options in the 2K DHCP server
4) for the DNS u can do 1 of 2 things:
a) add the DNS servers ip address of the ISP to the global options in the 2K DHCP server
b) add the DNS servers ip address of the ISP to the forwarders tab in the 2K DNS server
(remember that 2K need a DNS server in order to works fine with Active Directory, don't remove the ip address of the local DNS server in any of the PC's
or the Server)

Doing this u just need to configure the router and add some ip address in the DHCP and DNS service and don't have to works with the PC's.
The only thing will be make sure the PC's get the new gateway ip address and DNS ip address and the the connection to the internet.

Good Luck
