Disable Auto Correct Function in Android Messaging

I am using a HTC EVO 3D with the standard Ice Cream sandwich messaging app. I like how it scrolls word suggestions across the screen, it saves me time not having to type entire words. What I don't like is it automatically correcting my abbreviations to something it thinks is right. Is there a way to disable the auto correct function? I didn't see anything in settings for that. Thanks.

eeer seriously?, how about uncheck where it says Spelling Correction?

You don't think I tried that? It does not turn off the auto correct function.

With it unchecked, I typed in "Tess", it changed it to "Fess".

You are "seriously" not helpful.

You aren't at the right menu. The keyboard you're using is "Touch Input", so you have to click the settings button next to that entry to get to the specific keyboard preferences.

Btw, I'd check out Swype and/or Swiftkey, which both also have prediction and also let you trace words instead of typing each letter.

I figured out how to make it work. I have to leave "Prediction" checked so that it will continue scrolling potential words across the screen. I also enabled "Spell Check". Now when it see a word it thinks is wrong, it just underlines it instead of auto changing it. 🙂
