I just got my tilt, and I didn't want to get a data plan with it. I switched my network settings to just use the "My Work Network," but I would like to turn off the 3G to save battery, if I can, and make sure that I can't access the data network.

Why on earth did you get a Tilt if you ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY won't use data? Thats like getting a Viper for grocery trips. You're weird, dude.

Anyway, I would first suggest reading the printed manual. If that doesnt have it (which I'd expect, because most manuals are useless these days) I would contact tech support at AT&T via email. They usually get back to me in a day and their advice actually works.

Dont be suprised if you cant. Actually turning off one of the radios in a cell phone is usually not an option. Enabling Airplane Mode is a common feature, but that disables everything. There isnt much practical reason to disable just one mode. Also, you wont be saving yourself from accidentally using data. You can still get data on the 1x radio or whatever they call it, just much slower.
I think you will just have to practice a little discipline and not use data features. Which on that thing means accessing just the text messages and thats about it.

Thats a very expensive texter you got there. Please tell me you have plans to use data someday.

EDIT:
Phonescoop says that the battery lasts longer in GSM-only mode, but I'm not sure what that means.

It could just mean that if you dont have 3G access and are only able to use 1x then it will last longer, which is true. But I have not yet seen a phone that lets you choose to only use one or the other.

I got the Sony Ericsson X1 (prety similar to the tilt) and don't have a data plan and probably won't get one. For one thing, both of these phones have wifi and I'm near a wifi hotspot 99% of my day (at work, home, friend's hosues, starbucks, etc). It just dos not make sense for me to pay over $30 a month for 24/7 internet access that i'd probably only use a couple minutes per week.

Second, these phones have many other useful features that don't require a data plan, including GPS, calendar/organizer, ability to edit documents, games, and more.

Actually, in the "Comm manager" of my X1, I have the explicit option to enable or disable "data connection". This easily allows me to prevent ANY data from being sent via the cellular network so I don't get charged unnecessarily. I'm not sure if the Tilt's comm manager has a similar option. If not, it may be worth visiting xda-developers and seeing if you can find a comm manager that'll work on your phone and let you disable data.

Haha LOTS of people do it... makes sense to me. Why pay $30 per month for data if 90% of places you go have wifi? ;) I'm just not made of money like you, I suppose.

Thanks for the link!
