Dis/Advantages of using Server 2003 instead of XP?

So, I was browsing the net, and come across the 6-Month Eval of Windows Server 2003: Enterprise. It's about time for my reformat every three months, and, with the help of this guide, it would seem that this could be a replacement for XP. Since I've always wanted to try Server 2003, and can't stand dual-boots, would this be ok?

Thanks

Edit: Or am I just insane 😕 ?

Do you want to try 2003 as a server or just a workstation?
Point is, you can tweak 2003 to run like XP, but if all you want to do is run workstation apps and such then its a bit pointless. You might as well run XP.
If you want to run it as an experimental server but still be able to use as a workstation, then yeah, you could do it with just 2003.
Some apps that run under XP might not work on a server OS though, Anti Virus to name one, unless you've got a corporate version.

Well, I wanted to experiment with it to be familiar with, in case I need that experiance later. And what the hell, its free 🙂. I wanted to be able to play some of my games and stuff, but I wanted to also try out the server aspect of it aswell. However, thinking about it a little more, maybe I should just dual-boot.

Dual boot.

dual boot.

Perhaps you should invest some time to figure out why you have to waste time formatting periodically.

Of course it could be, they're the same base system. But what's the point? By the time you go through that guide you'll have undone all of the things that make it 'Server' and all you'll have a copy of XP that has a different splash screen and costs a lot more to license.

But why? It's a huge waste of time, especially with Windows because of all the extra crap you have to install after the initial installation. I have had my current home Linux installation for over 5 years and I can't imagine starting over because there's always so many little settings that I use all the time that I've forgotten where to change or that I changed them from the defaults at all.

Give the guy a break. Some people just like to do that sorta stuff and its up to them how they spend or waste their own time.

So futuristicmonkey, you're gonna dual boot then. Good luck and I hope you learn something worthwhile before your next big format. 😉

i run it on my wife's box so that i can use terminal server / remote desktop on it in 16bit color while she's logged in.

only real issues i've found is drivers (HP doesn't make drivers for her printer for 2k3) and some software refusing to install (partitionmagic 8, for instance)

You know that XP Pro allows Remote Desktop connections as well, right?

yes, but it locks out the console. it is exactly the same as 2k3, except only one person can be on the computer at at time, either console or remote.

try it, you'll see.
