It might seem weird that a game from Codemasters (of all companies) is appearing on Early Access, but apparently this game is only going to be released on PC, with the devs saying they're going with a simulation approach. You have to realize that most sim racing games are catered to PC gamers anyway so there will be of course less sales with it being released on one platform.

It's a different approach, but I really hope it works out for them. After all, fans of the original DiRT (and DiRT 2 to some extent) have been asking Codemasters for this for years now; to take the DiRT series back to pure rally, and nothing but pure rally. I, for one, bought this almost immediately as soon as I saw it. I'm excited. :)

The dev said that Richard Burns Rally is "too difficult" and into the unrealistic realm...I can't verify since I've never driven a rally car. I personally really liked RBR and while it was difficult, it was rewarding when you got it right. I really hope they get the physics modeling and handling right for this...that's what I want in a rally game.

The first video there on the Steam page looks really cheap.

I agree. Looks like their engine is aging a lot. They need to overhaul the entire thing especially since this is PC only. No need to cater to the consoles.

^On one of the Steam reviews, the person mentioned that the game looks way better than the video shows. Considering the recommended card is an AMD 290 or nVidia 780, I'm hoping it looks pretty good.

I don't care what the engine looks like in all reality.

After reading that eurogamer piece, I think I need a new pair of pants. I've been begging for not only a return to the Colin McRae series but even more simulation, and it looks like they are finally answering that call. I don't know if I'll get into Early Access, but I will almost certainly buy this game, if later reviews show that it holds up to what has been promised.

An authentic and well-played rally racer? I don't care if it looks the same as Dirt 2, that would be awesome.
Granted, I'd love an upgrade in visuals, but I'll take authenticity over visuals any day for my simulation experience.

As long as they don't have some tweaker hyped up on monster drink narrating the game like the previous Dirt games then I'll probably give it a shot. I'd love to play a simulation rally game. Its been too long.

You know you loved Travis Pastrana on DiRT!! :D

Just kidding.

I really am hoping they don't botch this. They really don't have to do much to satisfy me. Graphics could be mediocre, there could be like no voice acting, no online play, no achievements, no background music. As long as the driving feels great, the environments are delicious and the sound effects visceral, I would be satisfied with that.

Seems like most of you would be good with that too. From the Eurogamer video, they really have nailed most of it and surpassed what I would want.

Oh and Pikes Peak, which I think is going to be in there, mmmmhmm. I want to get it, lol.

Reading the reviews, I think I am going to love this game. I actually enjoyed Dirt 3 minus the idiot announcer (the guy who sounded like some stereotypical surfer bro).

This is much more simulation based so no rewind time, no disabling damage, etc.

Travis Pastrana is basically a stereotypical surfer bro. Except he's not a surfer, but a Motocross, Supercross, Rally, Rallycross, former-Nascar-hopeful, and stunt artist. So yeah, basically the same. :D

If you watch the X games, or Supercross/Motocross, you get the same type of announcers. I personally thoroughly enjoyed Dirt 2 and 3. In some ways I preferred Dirt 2, as there was less hand holding, and I like the Pit area. Dirt 3 streamed lined it too much, but I like the Gymkhana event.

I've played a lot of Dirt1 and also 2 and 3, and overall I enjoyed the games, they were fun enough to drive and had good graphics,

I spent almost all of my time rallying and ignoring the other content, also I've played a lot of Richard Burns Rally for the excellent driving physics, so this is quite exciting to see, I think we can have the best from Dirt, graphics, sound and overall polish, with better (more realistic) physics and stages and no "cool dude" and other silly events, so I'm going to have to check this game soon,

the old school CMR were not simulators but they were a lot more focused on rallying than Dirt3, this one seems to go even further on the direction I like.

I know who Pastrana is, and he was not who I was referencing.

In Dirt 3, there was some nobody announcer for most of the game that sucked. And I am not referencing Ken Block either, just the annoying anonymous guy.

Both Pastrana and Block are very cool guys to meet in person. Block especially, very down to earth, not surfer bro at all.

Ah. It's been a long time since I touched Dirt 3, I can't remember those details at all.

Tried RBR again...holy crap is it hard haha!! I don't remember myself sucking so badly lol. I did end up picking up Dirt Rally, but I gotta make some room on one of my drives to install it...20GBs!!

You know, I used to find a point in making similar exclamations.

I wanted to point out how I have to laugh at that now. A game like GTA V is 60GB, and I find that to be the norm. Games that take less than 10GB? OMG, I see the light! Hallelujah! This is a miracle!

I've grown accustomed to this to such a degree, I finally caved and grabbed a 1TB SSD. I have a 240GB SSD that had been showing me the angry red "I need space, help me!" plea in File Explorer, and with prices finally coming into reasonable territory, I decided it was finally worth it, as I prefer to have my most-played games on SSD. Battlefield 4 already hit about 50GB after expansions, and with GTA clocking in that size too, I figured the industry is approaching that as the norm. Makes sense, as consoles have the capacity of a 50GB Blu-ray disc to work with, so that'll quickly become the norm of installation sizes for major titles.

Yeah I'm using a 180GB SSD and put my OS and games on that. I've always tried to keep about 60GBs free on that drive because I've read that filling up the drive to maximum starts to slow it down. Is that still the case? My drive is an Intel 530 180GB.

When you get a chance, drop a line on how it is for you.

Yep, will do. I'm downloading as we speak.

I have to say though, RBR feels right to me. The cars feel they have some real weight to them. You have to really work the pedals and steering to get the weight transfer right for example. I've never done any rallying but have done a bit of Autocrossing, so have a bit of experience with that kind of thing.

The immediate difference I noticed with Dirt:Rally was the cars had weight and really felt like you had to transfer weight to the front or do a Scandinavian flick for really tight turns. You can also feel a difference between the car sliding over loose gravel and when it's digging into a more softer surface with grip.

Game feels really good.

That's really good to hear! Can't wait to try it tonight.
