This is great news for all 6 people that have two 5870's in crossfire. Disable crossfire and rerun the tests ---> I'd like to know if tessellation is going to be feasible with 4x AA and 8-16x AF @ 1680x1050 and/or 1920x1080 with the 5870 (and 5850 for that matter). Forgot the 5770, as that can't even match cards from the previous generation.

The 2560x1600 results are lower than I would have expected, but looks good so far. I imagine the 9.12's will overhaul performance a bit anyway.

Agreed. I wasn't expecting to see the 5870 CF dip into the 20's for framerates. That seems a little low.

The hit was almost 50% from 1920x1200 to 2560x1600. Hopefully driver improvements help mitigate this somewhat.

These numbers are pathetic, to be honest - but then again, it's "Codemasters" (Sweet irony!)... look at Dragon Rising or any of their older titles; they are like Crytek, lousy coders who never been able to produce any well-optimized game.

I'm sure ATI will help them in Catalyst 9.12 and 10.1 but these numbers won't double, that's for sure - so much for their flagship DX11 demo title...

Looks like those results are too low. Check out the review over at benchmark.pl. A single HD5850 with AAx4 is getting similar results at 1920x1200 as your HD5870 CF setup. They use a Core i7 965 at 3.2GHz (page 11). It's in Polish, numbers are unversal though :p Surely this is not right (your results). Perhaps CF is not enabled in this game yet? I bet there's no profile in the drivers yet.

AMD released hotfix drivers to enable CF in DiRT 2, maybe it doesn't work for the demo though. I agree the numbers for CF are off here.

To clarify, I was not using the Dirt 2 hotfix drivers, probably should have

I've been using the 8.663.1_Beta5_Hemlock_VistaWin7_Nov11 drivers, as these have been the best performing drivers under crossfire as yet for me.

I should have time to do a driver swap tomorrow, I can provide some more benches then.

Question about where I got the demo, usenet :sneaky:

with post processing cranked up to high, AA is a real killer for my 5870.. I can get away with 2x at my preferred resolution and still have everything else on "High" or "ultra" and enjoy 30-40 fps

For playing at 5760x1080 with maximum settings @ 2x MSAA, above 30 fps is quite playable.

Those numbers do seem low for CF, though. I'd be interested in seeing your single card numbers. Also, I'd be curious as to the framerate if your drop the AA level down to 2x or off.

In the benchmarks linked above, going from 4x to 0x gives a 6 fps increase which is consistent with what I see with regards to AA on my system. 8x really kills performance (and I'm not even using edge detect)

Damn it tanks @ 2560x1600. You might want to lower your AA levels at 2560x1600 as AA chew up VRam like crazy.

Well, GRID was coded very well, the same for Dirt 1, both would run great maxed out with 4x FSAA with the HD 3870 at 1280x1024. I'm sure that the Crossfire problem with Dirt 2 demo which will be released tomorrow at 2pm GMT is a driver issue, because such performance drop doesn't happen when a single HD 5870 is used.
