I live in the middle of nowhere and I can't find any providers to get me dsl or cable. Direcway is the only option besides my slow dial-up (keep in mind it only runs at 26.4Kbps). But Direcway is SO expensive.....Any opinions would help.

go to dslreports.com and search on providers, there may be a wireless provider in your area (Even in the middle of nowhere). There are also some cellphone co's that offer service.

Direcway is not much better than dialup but you pay $99/mo for it, so, I think I'd deal with the pain (well, actually, I did). You can get ISDN/xDSL (128-144Kbps) service in most places that you can't get other options. Prices similar to Direcway, but, maybe a cost per hour on top of standard charges.

Good luck to you.

i have Direcway now. i have to say its a pain in the rear.

Though its only $99/month for a few months until you pay off the equipment ($600) and it is faster then dialup. But if you use it to much they lock you down to dialup rates.

Where in the nation do you live? I'm currently in SouthEastern Ohio, where DSL isn't yet available... the nearest cable drop is 5 miles away... Satellite is the only option besides dialup. I'm sticking with dialup right now, because of the money... satellite costs WAY too much.

If you do go with satellite, I recommend AgriStar - I've heard much better reports about their customer service that DWay's, and they run on the same network.

Don't scare someone with that last sentence ;)

People will need to read up on FAPPING (Fair Access Policies) before they make a call about that ;)

I think that DWay (AgriStar, etc) is pretty good... much better than dialup... it just costs a lot.

Oh, and I connect at 21.6 most days.

Have you thought of trying to get a flat fee data plan with a cell phone and using the cell phones network to connect? It would suck for gaming, but some of the cell phone services are 300kbps+. I think the plans are like $80 or something. This is for Verizon - not sure of other carriers.

I don't know about the OP, but I'm not able to, because cellular networks don't reach as far as my house :(

Have you considrered buying a 56k modem? It makes a big difference compared to 28.8kbps. I recommend a hardware v90 modem with no gimmicks.

Are you positive it's your ISP or your lines that are limiting you to 26.4kbps or is it your modem? Is 56k tolerable if possible? $100/mo is not worth it man.
