Only reason I am waiting for the DX10 cards is because they should be a stepup in performance over the cureent crop of cards. When I build this next machine the goal is to have it last almost 3 years.

best likely advice - wait for the 2nd generation of DX10 cards.

by then there will actually be DX10 games to play ;)

late '08 or '09
:Q

Come on APOP, aren't we exagerating just a wee bit? You could be right, but I doubt it will be late '08 for second generation DX10 cards. Late '07 most likely.
no the Cards will be here MUCH earlier [the Devs ultimately need to work with them you know to make DX10 games] . . . probably late this year or early next year for the first gen of DX10 cards . . . late 07 for the 2nd generation of GPUs.

well, letsee . . . NO ONE can even START to make a "full DX10 game" until M$ finalizes all the details. ;)

Let's say they have the plot ready and get the final dev kits tonight . . . and go full speed ahead on a Big Title . . . it takes THREE YEARS . . .

LATE '08

kinda catchy

maybe we'll have a woman President by the first Full DX 10 games.
:Q

:D

i don't know why anyone is in a hurry for DX10 cards. :p

and Halo2's running on Vista has NOthing to do with it being anything close to a full DX10 game [no doubt it has some hastily added on DX10 extensions].

And Vista is realistically here next year. ;)

For those smart enough to point out that GAMES won't be available using the full features of DX10 any time soon. Congratulations. You have escaped the clutches of the Upgrade Monster. Either that or you actually have a brain. I have lost count of how many times I say don't wait for DX10 video cards because no games will truly use it for roughly 2 years after DX10 is released. Not to mention that it requires Windows Vista.

With the ever growing difficulty of game development, it takes roughly 2-3 years to make a decent game. DX10 is probably nearing the finalization stages but to date I have not read anything about it being finalized. Let's say it takes them only 2 years to develope some decent games using DX10, that means that with Vista being released in Q4'06, games won't be appearing until Q4'08 or more likely Q1 or Q2 of 09.

It will be interesting to see when the first full DX10 game comes out after finalization of DX10. I think it will be sooner than people think. The CryTek dev team is pretty top notch and certainly on par with Raven, iD, Epic, Valve... I am pretty certain that CryTek will be the first with a DX10 title. Whether or not that is late '08 or not remains to be seen, but if DX10 is finalized sooner than later, I am pretty sure CryTek could have something released sometime in late '07. Time well tell... But the real question is, will the search function work when it comes time to prove me wrong or right in 2 -3 years from now? Probably not.

Damn search button never works right...

I saw nothing in the CryTek video that couldn't be done in DX9. Also, I think that their new game will utilize a DX10 mode for some stuff but it won't be much different from the DX9 version of their game which is what most people will be playing.
