DirectX Stuff

I'm not a big gamer dude so I'm brain dead when comes to direct x stuff..

I'm using the matrox g400 dual and one of the software I'm using requires direct x 6.1

Whats the benefit of using directx 7 or 8 or it doesn't make a difference.

Also is 8 the latest stuff or did they do 8A or something like that ?

I have 7 and 7A right now, if I dont use 8, which should I use ? 7 or 7A...
