DirectX releases, curiosity

How much time goes from one release of a master DirectX version to another, 12 months, 18months, 24 months, 30 months,... (i say master version to make difference with subversions, ie directx7, dirrectx8, directx9, would be versions, on the contrary directx 9a, 9b, 9c would be subversions)

Incidentally, does anyone remember the Fahrenheit Project from Microsoft and SGI back in 1997? It was supposed to be a unification of Direct3D and OpenGL, and predicted to completely replace Direct3D by the time DirectX 7 or DirectX 8 rolled around.

Microsoft pretty much did nothing on the project, and SGI gave up waiting for MS, so SGI sold everything regarding to Microsoft. MS quietly dropped the entire project and went ahead with Direct3D.

I remember they had an awesome logo... I can't find any on the web except for this one.

It just depends. DX9C is the last version you'll see until 2006. And dont be surprised if it turns into '07. MS already dropped major features to make '06, such as their new reference file system.

I think DX8 was the last big leap for Direct3D. Ever since there just been tweaks and additions to it. I don't expect to see another leap like that until well after long horn comes out. And I'm betting on it won't be called DX10.

Usually the release schedule is at least partially tied in with GPU vendors getting the new features in that release.
