Recently my games/programs requiring directx have stopped running or told me that I have an incompatable display device, which i know is not true (Asus V8200 GeForce3). I knew that I had directx 8.1 installed, so i ran dxdiag. It tested Direct3D with dx7 fine, but when it attempted dx8 it gave me this message:

Direct3D test results: Failure at step 5 (GetDeviceCaps): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available)

I have no idea how to fix this, any help would be greatly appreciated.

done and done, but no dice. installing one before the other doesn't seem to matter either, despite what is rumored about nvidia's drivers overwriting directx files. :\

Try going back to older Nvidia drivers, i've heard that the newer ones were giving some troubles.

Note: i've turfed my GF2MX so i'm not quite sure about this, but give it a try.

yeah i've tried back to the "12.41-W2K.exe" release with no luck. the original drivers from the asus cd do not remedy the problem when trying to run D3D apps...gaah i'm pissed. "GetDeviceCaps failure" or something to that nature is the error message i am seeing in Unreal logs and other D3D programs as well...sigh

thanks

If you are running the ASUS SmartDoctor, try turning that off.

It was causing my V8200 Ti200 to lock up quite consistently in Win98SE with DirectX7 even when I used the ASUS driver 21.81a off their CD. :|
I was using SmartDoctor V1.76 I haven't tried any other versions.

My V8200 is better now, but still randomly locks up in DirectX with the Nascar Heat game.

I have been using the DXDiag utility to diagnose it. If you are not familiar with it, you can usually find a link to it in c:\program files\Directx\setup or search for it in c:\Windows\system .
You then use the Test DirectDraw and Test Direct3D buttons on the "Display" tab.

I was getting this too, I think it might have had something to do with Geforce Tweaker. Anyways, the solution which worked for me was simply disabling and re-enabling all the options under the display tab in dxdiag. Then the tests ran fine and 3dMark 2001 worked again

I'm having the same problem. The direct 3d driver in 8.1 appears to be a dx7.0 driver, leading to my not being able to play max payne. Also, can I downgrade my directx back to 8.0a?
