Directx not working in Win2k?

I've got a problem with Win2k. Nothing that uses Directx works in any other mode than software rendering. Anyone have any idea what is wrong?

This has happened to me several times in the last few months and each time I have had to reformat.

btw: Glide and OpenGL programs work fine.
