DirectX not working?? I cant play games......(Please help)

OK...so here is the deal i was just about to play some Max Payne and click on the icon and it says DirectX compatible vidcard needed.....so im like wtf and now none of my games work, i tried reinstalling drivers. I have a Gainward GF4 Ti4200. Also in Direct X properties it says running Directx version 0 btw in on WinXP dxdiag shows the error Direct3D test results: Failure at step 5 (GetDeviceCaps): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available)....what up here????

have you tried booting from the xp cd & use the repair option??

How about re-installing Direct X 8.1 ?
You can grab it on the MS site.

I cant reinstall all the DX downloads on the Microsoft site are only for versions other than DX for WinXP because the latest DX is supposed to be included with WinXP
