DirectX for WinNT4.0?

Hi!

I have recently got a P4 at work and I'd like to do some benchmarking (and gaming - when the boss is away...hehehehe). Is it totally impossible to install DirectX8.0 on WinNT4.0?
Can I install DirectX7.0?
Where can I find that?

I'm forced to have WinNT4.0SP6 so nothing else is to think about...

I believe there is a hack somewhere on the web that allow directx 5 to be installed on NT 4, but i forgot where it is. i don't believe you can install directx 8.0 on NT 4.0. Peace out.

Not really. But why would you game at work?
Edit: bare with me since I have a head cold and my head is spinning today... do you have access to log on as the administrator for that machine? 've had to do that to play a couple games on NT before. There is a hack out there that will trick the game into thinking you have a higher version of Dx but you will have to deal with artifacts. Just remember: if you muck it up, you need to explain this to the administrator and then to your boss.

yeah, installing anything over dx 4 on NT 4 without a hack is impossible, and the hack will only allow you to go up to DX5

There are plenty of games that will work without the hack, and I've found the DX5 hack to be unstable anyway. I'd stay away from it.

Almost every game that's worth a dam will run in NT 4.0.

Look here for a list and/or tips about how to get games to run.

Any decent game that uses OpenGL "should" run in windows NT4....I've tried a few, from
Quake's to Diablo2...

DX3 comes with Sp3, aside from that you're SOL.

As mentioned, there's a DX5 hack, I used it once, wasnt too bad.
But in the end, most games I played worked fine either way, since it was mostly Quake games, or StarCraft and Diablo, and all of those work fine on NT4.

I had heard a rumor that SP7 for NT 4.0 would include a newer version of DirectX for NT machines. I don't know what "updated" version would be.. Maybe a full non-hack DX5. Probably DX6 though.

The canned SP7.5 was supposed to contain DirectX 5 for Windows NT...although support would not be 100%...Direct Sound and a couple of the other services would be emulated.

We won't ever see that now...🙁
