DirectX and Vista Ultimate 64

I'm about to start a new build and will finally be able to use the Vista Ultimate 64 bit OS that Microsoft gave me a couple of years ago. (current hardware is only 32 bit)

I have several old games that worked fine with XP, but won't work at all with Vista. Apparently it's something to do with needing the older versions of Direct X. (maybe 9.0c?) Is there a way to install the older versions of Direct X to the system BEFORE Vista installs the newer version?

It sucks having several old favorites sitting on the shelf that I can't play at all. Either they don't install correctly, or crash immediately when I try to start the game.

(yes, I understand that some may not work at all with Vista, but most SHOULD in XP compatibility mode)

You can just install latest DX9.0c version which is for XP,Vista,Win7 etc...http://www.filehippo.com/download_directx/ ,you will still have DX10/11 with Vista/Win7.

Btw you can get latest version via Microsoft as well http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en

System Requirements
Supported Operating Systems:Windows 7;Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1;Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2;Windows Server 2008;Windows Vista;Windows XP Service Pack 2;Windows XP Service Pack 3

Hmmm....I tried installing directx 9.0c a while back on my current rig. It said it couldn't install because there was a newer version already installed...<dunno>

I'll give it another try and see if it works.

edit...ok, it installed just fine. I wonder why it wouldn't install before?

I'll try reloading FarCry...that's the one that always crashed immediately.

I had issues with far cry and Vista. I thought it was hanging at the menu, it really wasnt. Wait like 10 min, im not exaggerating really wait 10 min and it will load. Then after that it should load right away when you load it next time. I never figured out what was causing that but im not the only one who has had this issue with farcry and vista.

Oddly enough...it worked. I did notice that the game wants to install Dx 9.0b, and with the box checked, I got error messages and the installer closed, and wouldn't restart, but after a reboot, the game installed just fine once I unchecked that box.
Much to my surprise, the game actually launched. I still have some issues...no mouse look...but that's a fairly common problem with several suggested fixes. (haven't tried yet)

Again, I'm using Vista Ultimate 32 right now...I'll start the build after Christmas and will (hopefully) be installing Vista Ultimate 64 by the 26th. <crosses fingers that the build goes ok)

Same problem that I've always had with Far Cry. As far as I'm concerned, the game is simply broken.

Fixing the mouse problem was as simple as going into controls, clicking the default button, then reassigning the controls to what I wanted.

I ran Far Cry on XP with no problem for a couple of years. I was surprised to have any problems with Vista...but, new operating system, new headaches. (I installed Vista in 08)

I did finish Far Cry on Vista x64 years ago,did not have any issues.

When you install DX11 you also get full native support for DirectX 9, unlike Direct 10 which emulated it. I have also heard many stories of people actually having better compatibility of their DX9 games under DX11 than under DX9/XP. I know for myself, I actually got games to work fine under Win7/DX11 that wouldn't work at all under XP. Go figure. As for Far Cry, I don't have any problems with it.
