directx 9 wont install

I had directx 9 on my pc, but had to install dx8.1 for some crappy old software to work.

Decided not to use it,
Now when i run the install for direct 9.0c, it runs for a fraction of a second, then says "your files are ready fo use.

If I run dxdiag, I see that 8.1 is still installed. 9.0c wont seem to get into the system..

Cant seem to get 9.0c back running. Any ideas?

Not sure if this is related, but my XP is sp1. I got the web setup program off Microsoft (dxwebsetup.exe), ran it and it went straight to "Installation Complete." Obviously it did not install anything and I still have 9.0b. Some other forum suggested getting the actuall 9.0c package

http://download.microsoft.com/download/...edc-298a9603b4e4/directx_9c_redist.exe

Not sure if it will work (still downloading)...

Anyone able to shed some light on this issue?

Try 3d Mark 05 and see what it says under your system specs.

Btw, 3dmark05 refuses to run if you don't have dx9.0c already installed. That's the reason why I'm trying to install 9.0c in the first place...

From google search, it would appear that dx9.0c is NOT going to work with non-sp2 XP. Heck, even some sp2 users are having trouble. 🙁

Can anyone confirm this?

9.0c is bundled with XP SP2. Any reason you haven't updated to SP2 yet?

Call me paranoid but I'm still affected by the same old FUD about sp2... program malfunctions, startup slowdowns, plus I already have my own firewall apps installed.

I was also freaked out by my XP behaviour after a "routine" windowsupdate session. Could not even log on properly without the system rebooting within seconds. Thankfully I managed to do a System Restore. With these issues I can only speculate as to what could be worse with something as major as sp2.

If you have issues, it's relatively painless to uninstall.

I sure hope so. But I'll keep that in view till the day some app/game absolutely requires me to have sp2...

Anyhoo, for those XP sp1 die-hard-ers with existing 9.0b who still insist on installing DirectX 9.0c:

Works out well for me (i.e. 3dmark05 actually runs, and dxdiag acknowledges it with all systems go).

Check out Hunter's post.

If now your computer is directx 9.0b, follow this:
First, you must download directx 9.0b installation zip file, you not need to download it if you already have it no matter from game CD or you are already downloaded it just now...
You can get the zip file at
http://www.flyff.com.tw/Download/down_01.asp
When you are inside, click on green button "directx" and download it.
Ok, now your computer is directx 9.0b and have directx 9.0b installation folder in your computer and directx 9.0c installation folder from the sims 2 CD1 right?
Now, what you need to do is copy the whole the whole "directx" folder from the sims 2 CD1, paste it on an empty space, no matter on desktop or other places. After that, go to your directx 9.0b installation folder there, copy DSETUP.dll and dsetup32.dll inside, go back to directx 9.0c folder (the one u choose to paste it on desktop just now), and paste the two files inside, when ask to be overwrite, choose yes....
Now you are done, run dxsetup.exe in directx 9.0c and it will install without skipping the progress
note : before doing this you must make sure your computer is directx 9.0b or it will not working.

That is all.
