I recently installed DirectX 8.0 (and 8.0a) and found my Suncom joystick (F-15E Talon) shows up as "not connected". The joystick is connected to my Aureal SQ2500 soundcard. There is apparently an ongoing problem with DirectX 8 and Aureal vortex 2 soundcards as I found a work around on the web suggesting to disable the soundblaster pro emulation in Win 98 SE. This will recover the joystick but I eventually lose sound. Obviously M.S. screwed the pooch here. I have e-mailed them the problem.
I need directX 8 to play games such as Mechwarrior 4 (8.0 required), but really can't without a joystick or sound.
BTW, I uninstalled DirectX 8 and reinstalled DirectX 7 and everything works fine, except Mech 4.
I am considering upgrading the Aureal Soundcard as it is now unsupported even though I really like it, or perhaps windows 2000 upgrade will solve my problem. For what it's worth I have the newest beta drivers for the soundcard and my Voodoo 3 2000 AGP.
Anyone suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.
