In Win2K with a GeForce DDR I gained about 1000 3DMarks... even tho I hate using that program as a benchmark I dont have any D3D game to reliably benchmark.
I used to have some problems with NFS5 Porsche Unleased, and after using DX8, it seemed to fix the problem. However, I did notice a slight decrease in load time.
Franky I'm really surpriced if there will be any performance improvements. DirectX8 package isn't supposed to enhance performance, they're just adding lots of new features into the DirectX8 API so new software take advantage of them. Video card DirectX drivers are much more improtant in terms of Direct3D performance than the DirectX version being used, unless there are some severe compatibility issues that is.
I suggest waiting a while before you download to see how it works out for other people first.
Besides, there isnt anything in DX8 that you'll likely NEED right now, so why download it and risk problems untl you have some sftware that will actually use DX8?
DX8 uses D3D and Q2 uses OpenGl, if you are having a problem its with your sound card drivers.
Quake2 still uses Direct Input for mouse/keyboard support and Direct Sound for sound support. Therefore it could very well be Direct X 8 causing the error if he never had problems prior to installing it.
Has anyone actually run some before and after timedemos in Direct 3D games and have some concrete results? Try Unreal/UT/Half-Life and any other Direct 3D game you can think of.
I installed DX8 that I got from the microsoft site. Im running win2k with a TNT2U and 5.32 drivers. It feels like it got a little faster but I doubt it. Im probably just seeing things.
