Directx 8.0 = Sucks?

It's the only thing I can think of that's crashing my Counter-Strike. I have:

-reinstalled Prophet MXII
-reinstalled Directx8 over itself (twice)
-ran Norton System works, all test ...
-reset EVERY video setting to default
-all latest drivers on my machine ... everything!
-Tried to go back to Directx7 but that's a no go (help?)

Can anyone help me here?

Not sure if "sucks" is the proper term but I'm avoiding it until I can get certified DX8 drivers for my video card. That should prevent or at least take a lot of guesswork out of problems like the one you describe.
 
What drivers are you using for your geforce? If you use 7.17 they WILL crash it. If youuse win2k that might be a problem with dx8. I put win98se back on and with directx 8 and whatever the latest official nvidia drivers are (6.37? 6.41?) it runs great. hasn't crashed since i put it back on.
 
duh directx is a new api...

have you a game that uses it to tell if it sucks?

have you drivers (non beta) certified for dx8 for your video card?

if you answered no to either of the 2 or even both, then you can't say jack...

dx is not a set of drivers man.
 
Blah, in my opinion unless one is a developer, there's zero reason to go for DirectX8 until games actually begin supporting it (which'll take about a year). Until then, aside from improving DirectX performance under Win2K, it only causes problems.
 
Undercover - Your right. I had the same problem with HL & CS. I was using DX8 and Detonator 7.17 Beta. I guess your doing the same. I found I had to reinstall everything (WinME also) to0 get the stability back.

However, I would have tried this if I'd known about b4 I formatted the HD.

I'm using dx8 with 6.31 beta 5 from Asus and they gave my TNT2 new life, I really don't see any need to upgrade my card now. Outstanding 2D and 3D.
 
If u make a Ghost image b4 installing DX8, and your system doesn't like them, you can (restore the image and) go back painlessly - in less than 10 mins. I had no probs w/ them (Radeon).
 
I couldn't get my CH Combatstick USB to work w/ DX8 and the uninstaller didn't work either so I needed to reload WinME to get back to DX7a.
 
I have been using the dx8 from late beta until now with no problems what so ever. I even got some increase in d3d gamez.

So I don't think dx8 sucks but just have the usual incompatibilty problems 🙂.

I`m running DirectX 8 with 6.31 drivers for my MX card on Win98 with no problems, of course it`s impossible to test all the games out there but so far rock solid.
