Directx 8.0 & mechwarrior4

To sum up, i've got mechwarrior 4 which requires dx8.0 in order to run. Unfortunetly, my comp doesnt seem to like dx8
i'll get random windowsME errors, usually a msvcrt error. I'm capable of playing mech4 for what seems to be random periods of time. Then i'll get an error which cuts me out to my desktop or reboots. Same type of errors as before, msvcrt and unable to access errors. I've tried uninstalling dx8 and reinstalling but that doesnt do anything different. Anyone have any suggestions?

Dx88 sucks... I have a Geforce2 on a Tbird 900... Dx8 makes my game play soooo choppy.

What video card do you have?

i got a herc prophet mx card. tried the 7.17 drivers as well, hehe that didnt work at all. bleh, makes me wonder who at microsoft decided to release a game that used dx8 when the proper support/bugs/issues havent been worked out yet. arg..

It's been recommendated that you do a new install of Win9x/ME before you play Mechwarrior4, just to minimize the driver problems.

MW4 is a beotch to get to work for some people.... I can run it fine in 98SE but when I try to run it in Win2K it crashes every 15 or so minutes.

Wow. I have the exact opposite problem. MW4 will only work under Win2k for me. It won't even start up under Win98SE. I have DX8 installed on both OS's and the 6.31 nVidia drivers for my Geforce2 MX card.

My monitor goes into power saving mode when I try to start MW4 in any resolution. I have the same problem with Sudden strike in all resolutions except 6x4.

well this system was just put together in early november, not exactly a clean format or install of ME but fairly close. I'm pretty sure i have the newest via drivers installed(as of early november) i kinda question who decided to make dx8 a requirement, with all its known problems. sheesh.. also 7.17 didnt help. Mech4 wouldnt even run with 7.17 drivers.
edit: currently using 6.35 drivers

Well MW4 runs fine with 98SE and DirectX8, if anything DX8 slightly improved some game performance, I'm using a TNT2 with 5.34 drivers... I have no issues with DX8, and any game whatsoever, it's quite suprising, as I've heard many ppl having issues with various games.

I am running Mechwarrior 4 fine on Win 2k with Direct-x 7.0, so that would mean that it does not require 8.0. My friend installed it for me, have any of you tried to run it on Dx 7.0???

yes, i've tried running mech4 with 7.0a. I would get a message saying that directx was required to run mechwarrior4. Also have installed latest via drivers, tried the 6.50, 7.10,7.16 drivers as well with no success. I'm beginning to think i may have to just wait until dx8 is updated and forget about it for now.

It worked fine under win2K before my upgrade, after It went into the main menu screen once, crashed, and now even though I did a clean install again, it crashes at startup. I can't figure it out, all the latest drivers too! Anyone figure out anything?

What kind of soundcard are you using?

I was suffering similar crashes and then found that my PC wouldn't recognize my gameport. System Properties showed a problem with both the MPU-401 and the Soundblaster emulation of my Vortex 2 2500 soundcard. I reinstalled both but found (after several reboots into safe mode), that the Soundblaster emulation was creating problems in Windows (possibly due to the DirectX 8).

I disabled the Soundblaster emulation and all seems fine now. My understanding that unless you are playing old DOS legacy games, you really don't need the Soundblaster emulation.

using the phoenixnight system in my sig it works completely fine with dx8 on win 2k. i've got an aureal vortex 2 and it hasn't caused problems. of course, i don't even have the real drivers for it installed. also using the 6.17 nvidia drivers, but i'd have to check that since i'm 10,000 miles from my computer.

DX 8.0 is not the problem, its the solution on a properly configured system. 7.17's & DX 8.0 are made for each other. Fdisk, Format, install clean install of WinME. Then install DX 8.0 retail and then load up the DX 8.0 optimized 7.17 betas and you will be good to go.
