Directx 8.0 = Crashing Counter-Strike?

It's the only thing I can think of that's crashing my Counter-Strike. I have:

-reinstalled Prophet MXII
-reinstalled Directx8 over itself (twice)
-ran Norton System works, all test ...
-reset EVERY video setting to default
-all latest drivers on my machine ... everything!
-Tried to go back to Directx7 but that's a no go (help?)

Can anyone help me here?

Do (all) other games run fine? Are you playing CS in OpenGL or in D3d mode? Does HL itself (ie single player or DM) work? Have you tried different resolutions? Tried older drivers?
Just some suggestions, haven't had a problem myself (completely different setup, however).
