DirectX / "3D not available" error

Hey all! I installed the new detonator drivers (23.11) from nvidia and they are buggy so I uninstalled them. After that, I cannot use programs that check for 3D card availibility. Games like Everquest, MadOnion benchmark, and others will not detect my card. Games like Quake, Xwing Alliance .. still work just fine. I then went to the directx diagnostics .. the tests for the direct3d work fine for the 7.0 but fail from (3D not available - msg (full message shown below)) 8.0 drivers.

"Direct3D test results: Failure at step 5 (GetDeviceCaps): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available)"

I reinstallled directx 8.1, reinstalled drivers, uninstalled drivers then reinstalled them ... its been crazy!

You are probably wondering what my system's video config is so here it is :

GeForce 3 currently running detonator 21.81 WHQL drivers

Any ideas would greatly be appreciated ... I really dont wanna spend the next week formating the drives and re-installing everything ...

thanks

There have been numerous problems with this for Everquest. Not sure why Madonion 3dmark would tho... Go back to dxdiag, under the Display tab make sure Enable 3d Acceleration is enabled. Close dxdiag, try those games and test again and pray........
May want to try diff set of vid drivers... I use 22.80 with great success on GF2 pro 64meg
