Vista may be January as well. It comes out for businesses in November, unless there is another delay. :)

form what i have read dx10 will not be backward comp with xp, so there would be no reason to put it out before vista, and the reason being is that it is so much a part of vista.

m$ keeps pushing back vista, and nobody really needs it, it is not like it is going to take over the corporate world since they just probably moved to xp. it will be in new pcs, but game makers and others probably won't even use the features dx10 has due to the small installed user base. i definately wouldn't hold my breathe...

I think it depends on when Microsoft gets their act together and releases Vista to the public in Q2 of 2007....

*bump* anyone have any more details on when DX10 is due out?

EDIT:
and if DX10 is exclusive to Vista, does this mean that DX9 is the last DX version for win XP?

yep - from what i have read dx10 will not and can not be backward compatible with anything less than vista.

don't forget that they keep upgradind dx9 all the time, even though it is still 9.0c - go to the dx9 site on ms and you see nearly monthly updates

This is Marketing Hype.... Trying to Bullshit people into buying...

DX has always been upgradeable. Windows 2000 is able to Run DX9 And to Leave Millions of paid Users hanging on DX functionality would be Brand Suicide.....

Microsoft is in a 98% profit buisness model that has most of the world addicted to their software, that is why their anti-piracy is a joke..... They simply want Fat and Happy addicts...

I have run Linux, and OS-X (Tiger) and MS knows they are not the only game in town.....

it all boils down to If there is a will there is a way !!

It normally is just marketing, but DX10 isn't. The changes are deep, starting with Vista's LDDM. That is just one reason DX10 won't operate under XP.

Does DX9 run on NT or Win95 or Win98 for that matter?

It isnt always upgradeable and it wont be in this instance either. Too many changes under the hood that makes it incompatible with WinXP.

Then I predict Vista will be like "MS Bob" the Flop that was Project Managed by Melinda French Gates......... (Circa 1995) Good thing she was sleeping with the boss !!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Bob

Between the "Palladium Initiative" DRM and this... Issue.... It will Flop Like a Mackrell in the boat.......

LDDM (Longhorn Display Driver Model) is only a factor if the Functionality is embraced by the Software Developers, and that Curve is about 3-4 years behind the Actual Implementation. "The Animation", and "Glass" Effects may or may not be adopted by the Software Developers.

If the Developers don't use it... you are screwed.... so as with anything else...The Market will dictate the future.....

The other components that enable this functionality will be put into a service pack update....but they would be foolish to announce that now... This Operating system is simply an enhanced NT Kernel as is XP.

It will be a while until the bulk of games is released with DX10 only though, besides MS games (like Halo 2 though).

Crysis, for example, will be (I believe) the first DX10 game, but it will also include a DX9 mode to play in XP.

DX 8.1 - which shipped with XP IIRC - ran fine under win98 SE (I had it). I don't think 9 did though but then heck who would even bother trying? Point is that the DX version that came with the newest OS at the time still worked with the older one. Sounds like DX10 might be totally different though.

NT 4 is Dead as is Win 95.

Win 98 and ME can be upgraded to DX9.

Vista is simply an enhanced NT kernel as is XP. it is just a matter of updating the API to add functionalitys....

But if you are trying to sell something.... do you tell them that ??

Marketing 101 = "Make them think that they need it...."

The Bottom Line... is "The Bottom Line".

Like it or not, LDDM will become the standard. You'll either move to it or become extinct, at least if Windows is your OS of choice.

Don't comment if you have no idea what you're talking about. Many of Vista's kernel components are written from scratch (ie the networking) and share nothing with 2K/XP.
