Lotheron: i know it was vague...

Situation is this......

I am finishing up my mancave... I need to get a HD DVR for it....

DTV wants to charge me 199 bucks for the damn thing.....

I currently have 2 boxes (1 hd 1 hddvr) I want to get rid of the hd dvr and replace it with a regular HD box.....

So I am looking at 300 bucks or so... anyway around this at all ? or thoughts

So you have an HD DVR you want to get rid of or wish to purchase one? OR both?

Anyway, keep the HD DVR in either case as it's the same price for an HDDVR as it is a regular HD receiver once you pay the DVR fee no matter how many DVRs you have.

ALso, call them up and tell them what you need and make a deal. You'd be surprised how far a little kindness goes when trying to deal with the CSRs.

If you're a longer term customer with a good payment history, you should be able to get a price break on what you need. You probably wont get it for free, but you most likely will not have to pay the full price.

Do expect that your contract gets reset to the full 24 months anytime you make a receiver purchase though.

Current direct tv system (2) HR21 recievers... a HD and a HDDVR

I want to replace the HR21 DVR with a regular HD box and then I want to get a new HDDVR for the mancave that is being worked on currently....

I have no problem locking in for another 2 years, I have had them for over 3 years....

If yours out of contract then it's the best situation. Price out what you can get at Dish Net as a brand new customer and then call them and tell them you're thinking of switching. Should get you a newer HD-DVR, a couple of new HD recievers and a pretty good discount on service each month.

Call Directv # say cancel @ the two options. That will get you to retention. They can deal unlike the front line CSR's. Since your not under contract go for the latest and greatest. The new HR-34 media center with 5 tuners and a larger hard drive. Tell them you also want the whole home upgrade watch any show in any room. Keep your HR-21 since it will cost the same per month $6 as the non dvr HD receiver.

Posters on the DBS forum are reporting they are getting this upgrade for free, $49 installed, $149 and up. It all depends on the person in retention. If you don't get a deal you want decline the offer and try again later. May take several call to get a deal you want. Good Luck.

This,

If you've been a customer that long and are currently out of contract, you can easily get a hefty discount. DirecTV typically does take care of their longer term customers, especially if you tell them you're thinking about switching.

As I said, it probably wont be free, but it should be quite a bit cheaper than what you were originally quoted/thinking it was going to be.
