Right now my mom is paying a total of 49.99 + 5 dollars in taxes for Digital Cable. Plus she pays 39.99 for a cable modem. If she canceled cable, it would cost 49.99 for the modem. If she did not cancel, it would be 10.00 for basic cable + 39.99 for the modem..a wash basically.

I don't know anyone who has DirecTV, so i'm trying to get the comparisons for her. I need to know how much with tax and everything the Total Choice Plus w/ Local Channels costs a month. It says 38.99 on the website, but I want to know about any equipment fees, taxes, etc...

Also do they ever have any promos?

You can usually get the equipment free of charge with free installation if you sign a year contract.

 
Yes and also check out the deals that may be availible for DSL.

DirectTV also charges $5 for the second box as well.

Usually there are free equipt free install deals. I got my Tivo for 100 installed when I ditched the cable completely.

 
Current DTV offer is 3 rooms free. Each additional receiver is an extra $4.99 per month. Dishnetworks deal is the same (3 rooms free) but they also have either a DVR or HiDef receiver if you commit to 2 years (vs 1 with just the basic receivers) and they have a cheaper Package ($24.99 for the top 60).

i was interested until my brother informed me that at his friends where hes watched satellite tv, anytime theres more than just a little rain, or just a little wind...the signal is shot to hell or gone completely, bah to that i say
 
His dish isn't peaked out correctly then, average TOTAL downtime in our area is around 24 hours PER YEAR (upstate, NY so we get it all)
 
Are you kidding, no downtime here at all.... My signal strength is 105. Your friend needs to nail the dish to roof.

So , with DTV and Dish, you get 3 rooms free...you have to pay the 4.99 for additional receivers after 3 rooms, or after 1 room?

After the 1 room. Probably the best way to figure out which will be less for you is to look at the programming packages and see which one has the channels you watch for each & then see which will cost less.

tell them to adjust their dish. I had DTV for about 1 year and it only went out once and that was during a BAD storm. One where you shouldn't even have your tv on. If it goes out with even a little rain, there is something wrong.

IIRC, pricing includes one receiver, $4.99 for each additional receiver and $4.99/month for local channels. If you get a DirecTivo, tack another $4.99/month on for the Tivo service.

my dad switched to direct tv (cheaper) we had digital cable and some movie channels it was $80 bucks a month + $40 for cable internet (I pay the internet) they switched to direct tv, I think it's like $40 a month with just a couple channels less. although they don't get local channels so no simpsons on direct tv you have to get out the bunny ears.

personally i'd take digital cable. but these things called reality shows came on tv and I haven't turned mine on since except for DVD's and PS2.

It has to be really pouring out for me to notice any degredation of signal. Sounds like his installer didn't do a very good job of aligning the dish or of placing the dish.

If its $40 a month you still get "locals". They're just national feeds of the networks so they schedule most likely won't be the same as your true local channels.

And yes, there's no reason the signal should go out unless there's a nasty storm outside. I think my dish is showing 100 signal strength. It isn't rocket science to aim one.

Yes, this is the problem I have. Satellite is much nicer and cheaper until you get 3+ TVs. Extra 5$ per month per TV, plus the 100$+ for a receiver. Once you get a lot of connections to TV's going, it gets really spendy. Then cable ends up looking a lot better, even if it does suck.
 
The locals are the same local channels. I get the "really" local country town channels. With the cable co. I had two of each network, the local local and the local from the big city 1:30 hour away! There's a list of towns with the name of the stations in their website.

With dish, all channels are digital. On most digital cable packages, only a couple of channels are digital, you must know what you already have. It goes out only with very severe weather, usually 10 mins before the power goes out, so there's not much loss.


I pay $47.21 including HBO (7ch, 3 repeat) and all taxes, but no locals (free until March, they want to lure me in). I realized that except for some sport event, I don't miss the locals much, since it's just dating shows and reality crap.
