DirecTV users...question for you...

I've had DTV for almost 2 years now, and I'm no longer under contract. I have a standard dish and two standard boxes right now. I just got a thing from Adelphia recently offering me $300 to come back to cable, but I'm not really interested in that...although $300 would be nice.

I've heard DTV has a retentions department that will give you some good deals to keep you a customer. Has anyone had any experience with this? I was thinking if I could get them to give me a DVR box, and install a third line, as well as maybe a discount on NHL Center Ice, that would be cool.

Any advice?

We just got:

HD Receiver
Tivo
Showtime
New satellite
New off-air antenna
Installation

for $60/month plus $250, minus a $100 credit to our account. Not a staggering deal, but good enough for retention.

The only thing I ever got was a TIVO about 2 years ago. I paid $50 and it listed for $200. At the same time I got a new reciever.

My old boss when he moved got two new boxes for free because he threatened to cancel and then RE sign up. ;)

I'd just call them up and talk to them. Right now they're giving away Tivo's, a DVD player and 4 rooms installed free (at least they were in July when I switched from Dish). I'd think they'll work with you. If not, then tell them to stick it, wait a couple of weeks and sign up as a new customer to cash in on the specials.

Woah, you got all that? I'm not really interested in premium stations like Showtime, and I pay about $50/month now. What is the "off air" antenna for? I've just got standard TV's, so HD is not an interest.

Thats for HD content on local channels. So it would all be free for you. The HD thing was $250 plus a $100 credit.

Thanks guys (and ladies). One other thing...how are their DVR boxes? Can you upgrade the HD's or do any fun mod type stuff to them? Should I ask for a new dish? Is there any benefit to a newer dish? I know for the third line they will prolly just throw in one of those multi-switches..

1-800-824-9081 - customer retention department, Tell them exactly what you said in original post. You dont want to leave but got an offer elsewhere, you want x, y and z so what can they do for you. Theyll offer something, hten you take it or leave it. Feel free to keep trying back because sometimes they dont give you the best offer they can the 1st time.

Get a new dish/new LNB's. PQ starts to suffer some after those LNB's sit out in the sun and bake for a couple of years... Plus they're throw-away parts for DTV. They shouldn't mind. ;)

Well, I think they may have lost a customer. I called and spoke with them. After much BLAH BLAH BLAH about how they want to keep me as a customer, the best they could offer was a free DVR..which is already a normal offer for current subscribers, and as for Center Ice...I could get a whopping $5/month off my bill...WOW A WHOLE $60!! All that $5 off does is offset the $5.99 extra month I would be paying for DVR. So basically, they offered me NOTHING. Also, they told me the DVR's NEED a phone line...so, since I'm VOIP..that's out the window.

Guess I'll just go back to cable and get my $300.

Honestly, if I didn't root for a *bad* out of market NFL Team and want to watch their games I would probibly be with Comcast right now.

Yeah, I'm Adelphia though...although supposedly Comcast bought them, so maybe I will be Comcast soon.

I worked in the retentions dept for DTV. All the reps have a $500 credit limit per customer. You can get anything you want. They will not let you off the phone until you are happy.

Just a reminder -- they will want to TAKE your DTV equipment as part of the deal. Not joking. They will take the dish off your house as well as all your receivers.

Call Time Warner and tell them you're thinking of changing over from DTV. They gave me 2 free months of TV with every channel and internet :D

I've been with DTV for at least 4 years now. Upgraded to 1 DVR 2 years ago and I'm thinking a DVR for the bedroom might be a nice addition!

I'd just call them up and ask. Tell them you are thinking of switching and ask if they have any promotions you could take advantage of to stay with them.

Like I said $500 credit limit per customer. You should be able to work any deal you want. Ask if you have reached the Boise Idaho center.. and if not, call back until you do. Boise is the only actual owned DTV center and can give the best deals.

Well, I called twice now. The only extra I got after the first time was that they would waive the shipping fee of $14.95 for the DVR, and give me a triple LNB dish. The held firm andsaid there was no discount they could offer on the Center Ice, and there was no way they could waive the fee for the DVR. So, basically, I got nothing.

Guess I'm not a important customer to them...prolly because I don't buy premium stations or PPV.

I have Vonage and my DVR works. It takes some patience and stuff to make it work but it does work.

Keep calling back until you get someone that is willing to offer a good deal

Did you make sure you got to the retention dept? Because Mainbank and CIS can also offer you deals. You need to tell them specifically you want Retentions. They cannot give you deals on Center Ice or any of those packages. You should be able to get all the equipment you want. I'd call back again and make sure you get Boise Idaho.
