Directv Question

The new house Im moving into doesn't get Cable so Im going to finally go to Directv.

I do have DSL at the house and Im wondering how I should hookup the receiver to the phone jack.

Will I need a filter?

Also I only have one phone jack in the room with the computers. Im going to be using a receiver in that room as well.

Is there anything I can use to split the phone jack? What I need is to be able to connect the DSL Router, Phone, and Directv receiver to it. Its a rent house, so Im not allowed to do any type of rewiring. The landlord is allowing the Directv to be installed as long as its done by a "professional".

I would recommend you get a phone jack splitter that has as many jacks as you need, then you will probably need to put a filter on all the lines but the one connected to your DSL modem. Alternatively, you could plug in a 2 way splitter, then off of one branch hook up your DSL modem, and off of the other hook up the filter, and hook up a splitter to the filter.

The DSL filter is used to filter out audible static when talking on the phone. So it's not really necessary to have the filter for the DTV receiver.

Thanks

If the receivers are not hooked to a phone jack will I still be able to order movies, and events?

Also do you need a credit card to get directv, or can I just use a Visa check card?

Incorrect, the connection will not be successful with all that static on it

You can still order events w/o a phonejack, yes.
When you order movies via the remote, it stores the information on the smart card (in the reciever). Periodically, DirecTV dials into the receiver and pulls the info from the smart card and erases the cache (~$50 total).
Without the phone line plugged in, the cache will fill up and you are unable to order via remote.

But yes, you can still order via phone or internet without the phone line connected. But you'll need the phone line to utilize TiVo.

I presume you are getting DirecTiVo... You are making a huge mistake if you don't!

And no, I don't believe you need a credit card (or debit card) at all... Unless you are ordering equipment.

so they charge you to dial into the receiver and clear the cache? do they do this on their own or do you have to contact them to have it done?

any place that I should look at to buy/order the equipment? or will any store that sells Directv do? (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc...)

I haven't thought about DirecTiVo, but I'll look into it before ordering.

Call DirecTV to order. They have the dual tuner TiVo unit (plus the equipment for up to 3 more rooms) for $99 installed. It's an awesome price. And I'm not kidding about DirecTiVo. There is no logical reason NOT to get it.

They charge you for the movies that you order, not for clearing the card. By dialing into your smart card is how they know what you've ordered. And it's done automatically.
