I had it for a short time, and there was a noticeable drop in PQ when I switched from TWC to Direct. Wasn't even close, actually.Originally posted by: JasonCoder
I heard DirectTV's HD was among the worst there is. How do you feel about it... is it that bad? Wasn't there a lawsuit or something where someone wants them to not even call it High Definition since it's so downscaled?

I honestly didn't notice any quality issues with directTV HD. That being said, I still think they suck because they're trying to charge me $300 to get my locals in HD.

Directv and to a lesser extent Dish Network both have been scaling down the resolution of their HD broadcasts to be able to fit more channels on each transponder. This is what they call HD Lite. They had more channels than room to send them.
Directv's new satellite will enable them to transmit the new HD channels in MPEG4 instead of the MPEG2 they are transmitted in now. MPEG4 has a smaller footprint which means for a while they will be able to send it without scaling it down should they choose to do so. They are also launching yet another HD satellite in December.
The channels they put up last night were in MPEG4 and supposedly not rezzed down. We are hoping with fingers crossed. Even if it's the same, I will take 100 channels of HD Lite over just a few with the other providers. It should also push other providers to add more HD, so everyone should benefit from it.

I bet you chop the black bars off 16:9 movies too

I really hate that Discovery HD changed their logo. It has solid lines on it and stays on the screen constantly, meaning it can potentially burn in to my new plasma. Whoever decided that was a good idea needs to be fired.
