Directv: Keeps studdering, low frame rates

My parents DirecTV keeps studdering (happens more often with the higher channels, especially HBO in the 500's)

Seems to be fine at time, other times VERY bad.. Last night i was watching Lorenzo's Oil and it was studdering so much, at one point it seemed to drop to 1 frame per second for about 10 seconds. Mostly though it would freeze/studder for 2 seconds every minute or so.

Signal looks perfect, and its happening on both boxes in two seperate rooms.

Bad LMB/Dish possibly?

DirecTV charges $70 to come out and check out the problem, not including any additional replacement hardware if needed. They have been a customer for ~ 2-3 years now (no contract), and i saw BB has the DirecTV DVR for free AR (seems to be for existing customers as well) as long as they sign a 2 year agreement. I wonder, if we go to BB and sign a contract w/ the new DVR box, would we get a new dish as well? (i.e. just end up replacing everything)

check to see what strength of signal you are getting. perhaps your dish was moved a bit by wind or other elements.

i think the ideal strength is anything over 75.

What version Catalyst drivers you running?

Aren't Catalyst the ATI drivers?

Ok just re-read the directv part. 😱

Yes they are. As a longtime ATi user I put stuttering and low fps together. I guess you could consider this a case of mild "self ownage". Mild compared to last night's martini party. 😉

have you spoken with DirecTV yet Aphex?

& does this happen regardless of what channels you are on?

Yes, we troubleshooted over the phone. Tried different settings, still no luck... All she said she could do is charge $70 to send someone out (which personally i think is crazy, local cable companies never charge you if the service is having issues). Happens more often in the higher channels, but its not specific to any ones, more specific to the time of the day (happens more often at night)

Problem is, i just came across this;

Sounds like I'm not the only one. People are reporting the issues across multiple recievers AND multiple dishes.

Very interesting. Hopefully it isn't the result of them sending ECMs (electronic counter-measures) in an effort to combat the piracy of their signals. Back when the piracy issue was a little more rampant with Directv, they had to be careful which ranges they specified for ECMs, because they could end up rendering paying subscriber's access cards useless as well.

Seems to be a widely spread issue though, which is even more interesting. hmm.

I hope not, i dunno. Getting VERY annoying though to watch sometimes...

Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, my parents city has its own cable company (not part of any larger corp) and they charge very unreasonable rates for their unstable service. My parents were on them a few years back and the damn thing was down at least once a week. Calls to the service center would just go unanswered because they only had 5-6 techs for a city of over 100,000.

Might be a bad LNB. Had a similar problem with my Dish Network dish last year on the 119 LNB. You would notice a slight skip in the picture on some channels. Eventually all those channels went out completely. Had good signals on every transponder on 119, but 1 which was 0 (Transponder 4). Replaced the LNB, and everything was fine.
