DirecTV is so stupid

I live in the Philly area. All Flyers games are aired by comcast sportsnet, which naturally DirecTV does not carry. However, if a game is on CERTAIN national stations, it will be blacked out by DirecTV. Games on TNT, or ESPN2, will not be aired. Games on any broadcast station, or ESPN, are shown. Tonight, according to NHL.com, the game was supposed to be on ESPN. So, I organized an event for my Fraternity around the game...a dinner/game kinda deal. Guess what? Its been switched to ESPN2. Sounds like a pretty minute, unimportant thing...except oh wait, now I'm not getting it. So retarded.

My understanding is that blacked out games are the result of FCC regulations, not independent service providers like DirecTV.

That's not direcTVs fault. Its whatever the local restrictions are. I don't understand them either. I haven't run into many issues here since most of the time a single event isn't broadcast on more then one channel.

Why is it that other cable providers still get the games though? If I went home to Reading, which has Service Electric cable, ESPN would be showing the game. My roommates talked to DirecTV about it earlier in the year, they said it was due to a dispute between them and Comcast.

Because your hometown is in a different geographical area. Blackouts are based on geography and not provider.

I only used Reading because its a non-comcast provider. However, Reading IS within the Philly blackout radius, for example if an Eagles game doesn't sell out, it will be blacked out in Reading too. For another example, HotWire cable in Philly, shows Flyers games on ESPN2. As does Urban Cableworks. That still doesn't answer the question of, why is ANY game on ESPN2 blacked out, and NONE on ESPN?

Your roommate is retarded, and you can quote me on that one.

Blackout rule is like this, if there a home game, and they didn't sell out, they're not allow to broadcast it locally. YMMV

It has NOTHING to do with sellouts in this situation. Notice how I said ANY or ALL games on those channels are blacked out? I'm all for mocking ignorance, but don't do it when you have no idea how the situation works,

i live close to philadelphia and get direct tv as well and it it blacked out by every cable provider when it is on espn2 tnt etc.

it is because it is only shown comcast sports net when it isnt on ABC and they probably have exclusive rights in the area

The dorms here have urban cableworks, TNT/ESPN games are shown there.

Five cities did not sell out games Sunday: Cincinnati, Atlanta, Seattle, Phoenix and Chicago. Indianapolis, which did not sell out until Saturday and normally would have been blacked out

Wow, you're right. How can I be so blind, it had nothing to do with sell out games. I did say YMMV.

Listen, don't be retarded. I haven't gotten a single Flyers game, home or away, sellout or nonsellout, on any of those stations, all year. Stop being a dumbfvck and go away until you accept that you're wrong. mchammer is much closer on the idea of comcast sportsnet having the exclusive rights.

Well, what is your defination of "Blackout rule" then?

Ok. You are correct that games ARE blacked out when they don't sell out. However, in this case, EVERY game is blacked out, sellout or not, because comcast sportsnet, a channel around here, has exclusive rights. Essentially, if you don't get comcast, you are screwed...unless comcast likes you apparently.

Local channels, yes, they show games. BTW the issue here is Flyers games. What perplexes me is the ESPN/2 difference. Why show ESPN but not ESPN2 games? And why did they have to switch it on me?

Ok, shouldn't they show Eagles game on local channels then?

comparisons with other sports are not relevant as the individual contracts between the parties involved may all be different. NFL contracts are pretty standard accross the country as is NBA, MLB and NHL however are not.

i have a question WHY THE FVCK DO THEY BLACK THEM OUT AT ALL?????

so what if they dont sell out, this makes no sence at all

Your problem is with Comcast, not DirecTV. Here's the deal...

Comcast is a direct competitor to DirecTV, so obviously, Comcast won't play nice with DirecTV. However, Comcast also owns the Flyers. And therefore has rights to broadcast their games in the Philly area.

When the game airs on ESPN, the NHL contract with ESPN takes priority over the Comcast/Flyers agreement, and ESPN must air it to the entire country. (I believe this also overrides any blackout restrictions, but I'm not positive.)

When the game airs on ESPN2, the Comcast/Flyers agreement takes priority, and you aren't going to see it on a non-Comcast broadcaster, within the Comcast-Philly cable area.

Makes sense...mostly. I still don't quite understand the difference between ESPN and ESPN2 though. Wouldn't they be covered by the same agreement?

Here's another oddity...DirecTV understandably doesn't carry Comcast Philly....yet DirecTV offers Comcast Mid-Atlantic?

It is the team's choice.

For the 2nd (3rd?) playoff game between the Dallas Stars and the Colorado Avelanch, Dish Network inadvertently blacked out the game in the Dallas area for the first 1.5 periods of the game. They blamed it on the Stars.

The Stars replied that they have NEVER, in the teams entire history, blacked out a game locally. Plus, local cable viewers and DirecTV viewers got the game. Dish finally apologized.

The Stars were threatening legal action against Dish over this. I don't know what became of that.

That incident has convinced me that it's up to the team on whether or not to black out the game. And the broadcasters occasionally screw it up anyway.
