DirecTV and ex-customers... they ask for equipment returns on cancellations?

I bought a 2-room RCA system (2 receivers + 1 dish) and signed something for a month-to-month contract to be activated within 30 days. I couldn't pass it up because there was an $80 rebate for the package, making it only $50.

Anyway, I am about to subscribe to it, but don't know how long I will be keeping the subscription. What I want to know is if DirecTV will ask me for any equipment return (to DirecTV) if I do cancel? I wanted to pass on the whole system (but not the subscription) to my cousin, but I am going to check it out myself first. Do they care if I cancel after only a 1 or 2 month subscription? Obviously I don't want to have to return any hardware including the access card (which is worth a lot in itself).

No, you don't have to return the equipment, even if you get a pirate card after subscribing for a month or two 😉
 
Pirate cards aren't as good anymore since they get whacked after a few days anyway... I'm going legit for now...
