I call them to signup for a service. I got a referral from my sister in law that included a free DVD player, DVR, and 4 rooms.

I go through the entire process of signing up for it and he asks for my Social Security Number. I never give this out unless i have to and he says it is required or I have to pay 200 bucks for the equipment. So I give it out against my judgement. He runs a credit check and comes back to let me know I am still required to the money for the equipment. I ask him what the hell kind of credit score do I need to get it free like the advertisement said? He didnt know. I qualified for my home mortgage 8 months ago with a score of 788. If somebody with a score of 788 cant qualify I dont know who the F can.

In short, screw you DirectTV, never seen a company so hell bent on creating a barrier for a new customer to enter.

 
i have been with DTV for 6yrs. referred a few ppl. never heard of anyone having this problem.

you might wanna call the CS dept and ask WTF!
 
I think there's some kind of mistake. Maybe he mistyped the SS number, or even worse there are some problems/errors in your credit history? Instead of starting pointless rants I'd try to get this straightened out, maybe even request your credit history for review.

Not impossible in the last 3 months somebody stole my identity ran up huge CC debt, managed to get judgements against my imposter and bolted driving my credit score lower than the 788 it was the last time I checked it 3 months ago.

But I am guessing that is real slight.

The rant is to blowoff some steam so not pointless to me 😉

Did you check your credit at all three of the big credit agencies? My credit history varies wildly depending on which of the big 3 is queried.
 
Never had a problem with DirecTV. Sounds like someone is giving you the shaft. Call another CS rep and request a manager.

Also, check your credit score with myfico.com. Something else might have affected your score.

Did you check your credit at all three of the big credit agencies? My credit history varies wildly depending on which of the big 3 is queried.

The last time I had that was in Sept and my scores were 788,782, and 754.

 
Well I was going to call DirectTV up lastnight and try to get a manager on the horn when I opened something from Charter. They have a 89.99 a month for 180 digital channels + HBO, Starz, Cinemax, and Showtime + 1 tier digital package + 3Mbps cable internet deal.

I decided to go with that instead.

Funny thing is the cable company doesnt require a SS or CC. Just a valid address and name.

btw just to add something even more funny. I get a call from DirectTV yesterday because they are sending out a tech to install my system and want to know when I will be there.

I call them back and explain to the CS rep that I went through the entire process and at the end decided against it. So she says "Oh, you want to cancel your account?" to which I reply "I dont even have an account". So they go looking for me to figure out why I am on their list of things to do and they cant even find me in their system anywhere. So I let them know for a 2nd time I dont want their service.

Then last night I start getting calls from a 216 area code and finally call it back to find out it is DirectTV again. I again instruct them I am not interested in their service.

Right now this is going from annoying to comical at how inept these people are. To cap it off I fully expect a bill in the mail from them for something because obviously I got put on some list of things to do.

When he asked for your social security #, did he ask to run a credit check, or was it typed somewhere on the offer? If not, he just broke the law.

I am getting sick of all these companies that insist they have the right to run credit checks for non-credit applications. Either the equipment is free or it isn't. Theya ren't making you a loan.

That's like the car leases that find a way to charge you interest on a non-existant loan by calling it something else like "the money factor". Burns me up.
 
I was not aware there was a law against running checks for non-credit transactions.

Cell phone companies do it also, is that against the law?

Consent is the legal issue. I also have a personal beef with companies running credit checks for non-credit transactions. It's way too Orwellian for my taste.
