I call them to signup for a service. I got a referral from my sister in law that included a free DVD player, DVR, and 4 rooms.
I go through the entire process of signing up for it and he asks for my Social Security Number. I never give this out unless i have to and he says it is required or I have to pay 200 bucks for the equipment. So I give it out against my judgement. He runs a credit check and comes back to let me know I am still required to the money for the equipment. I ask him what the hell kind of credit score do I need to get it free like the advertisement said? He didnt know. I qualified for my home mortgage 8 months ago with a score of 788. If somebody with a score of 788 cant qualify I dont know who the F can.
In short, screw you DirectTV, never seen a company so hell bent on creating a barrier for a new customer to enter.
