DirectTV vs Dish Network vs Comcast

All right, so I finally caved in and decided to buy some tv package. We don't really watch tv much except for Netflix movies, so I don't want a super-ultra-top-choice package for gazillion dollars a month.

What I'm looking for is a basic package (they already have 100+ channels each), but I don't want to sign up for a total crapola for a year.

There are 3 choices:
- DirectTV Total Choice: $41.99/mo
- Dish Network Digital Home Advantage $31.99/mo
- Comcast Standard Cable $45.43/mo

Which one would you go with? Any pros/cons? I really don't know much about tv stuff.

had comcast. crap channels, too expensive, too many local channels, crap customer service.

got DirecTV over 5yrs ago. Love it. No complaints. been without a contract for almost 5yrs now, and they will give me any specials they have going without my having to resign for another year... all i gotta do is call and ask and they say yes.

never tried dish.

I have Dish and love it compared to cable. I have never done the direcTV dealio, so I can't comment. Love HD on dish and it has been a great service. This is my second time around with dish and I must say they have gotten better when it is storming or raining. 🙂

I have comcast, because it is cheaper for me to have a cablemodem and cable tha just the modem. I like not having to deal with recievers :-D

Do you use their DVR equipment? Is it worth it?

dish seems to have a cheaper basic package. Im with direct tv. If you want a realllly cheap deal on a direct ttv package, just hunt arond on their site. Im not gonna tell you what it is.

What's the big deal?

No matter who you go with, they'll charge you through the ...
That "deal" they all offer will not turn out to be all exactly true.
No matter who it is, be prepaired for bill shock on getting your first bill.
And with all the little add-ons, expect a bill of around $100 a month, reguardless.
Bottom line, there are no true "good deals", just misleading sale promos.

DirecTV is better than Dish, especially with DirecTivo's.... (which you can hack)

Cable sucks, even digital cable sucks because it still isn't digital and you're still sharing the signal with everyone else in your town or neighborhood.

$100 a month? Huh??? I guess you weren't paying attention to the op's original post.

I personally have Dish Network & I've used Comcast. Comcast is a good service but I found the picture quality lacking and the channel choice kindof meh for the price. Current best deal for Dish Network:

$31.99 a month for AT60
Add a 625 DVR receiver for $19.99 or at no charge for 2 year commit this DVR services 2 rooms from one box

Basically your monthly bill would boil down to this:

$31.99 programming
$4.98 DVR charge
taxes (if applicable)

And that's pretty much it. The one gotcha is that if you do not have a phone line to hook the 625 receiver into you'll be charged an additional $4.99 a month for not having it hooked in. You can go with a two room non DVR system and eliminate the DVR charge as well, again keeping in mind that unless you keep the two room receiver plugged into a phone line you'll be charged the fee. I have a 510 DVR and I've used the 522 & 625 DVR receivers. All good units in my book. Oh one other thing, when you receive your first bill it will be for 2 months of service then go to a month by month. Dish usually has some kind of credits that they apply to the first bill though but check with whoever you sign up with for full details on that.

dish is the best, I have dish in my country house, and dtv in my city home. basically, the reason is that you save few more dollars going with dish, they pretty much have similar packages. line of sight to the sky is the reason i have two different packages. dtv does have NFL packages, while dish can offer better international channel packages. they are both UNDER $50 per month when I get my bill, much better than comcast.

I've had Dish Network and DirecTV. Prefer Dish. They have better hardware. My DirecTV receiver locks up and has to be power cycled every now and then (every few days).

DirecTV. I've had it for 4 years now and I love it. Plus you can get NFL Sunday Ticket and they include Speed Channel in the basic subscription which I cannot live without...Gotta have my F1 and Football!

A couple years ago they called me one night and asked if I would be interested in like 15 science channels (extra Discovery channels-I get like 6 or 7 Discovery channels, some video game channel, all the extra kids channels and a couple others) all for an extra $1 a month.

I added Tivo about a year and a half ago, it makes TV so much better. I also have HBO. My bill is about $65 a month.

I  DirecTV and DirecTivo!

I don't think I've ever turned off my DirecTivo and I think I've reset my box upstairs maybe once or twice while moving components around or changing cards in the box which I've had to do once since subscribing.

There is something wrong with your box, that's not normal.

I have Dish, because I can't get cable and the govt has deemed me unworthy of DirecTV (bunch o' crap) unless I go through one provider who offers no equipment deals. I'm pretty happy with it. I can't tell a real difference between my in-laws' DTV, though my wife likes our DVR much better than Tivo. Tivo has more features but she said the Dish DVR is more intuitive - but that may just be her. We would like to move to HDTV at some point but I don't care too much for the offerings from Dish.

I will never get DirecTV, because they want to charge me a $150 fee because i have bad credit. Dish doesn't do that, and neither would cable. I'd perfer to have cable over Dish, because then I could likely get cable internet too. Dish isn't too bad, though. I got the HD package and an 811 reciever, and it's nice.

I have been thinking of switching to Dish Network from DirecTV because Dish is offering free HDTV receiver, free DVR, and free installation while DirecTV wants $700 for their HD DirecTivo.

I've had 2 different receivers in my living room(an RCA and now a Phillips). Both do it. The DTV receiver in the bedroom runs fine though. *shrug*
