DirectTV remote lag is the suck

OutHouse

Lifer
seriously wtf! there has always been a lag from when you press a button on the directtv remote to when the box actually responds but lately it has become way worse. doesn't matter if i have brand new full batteries the lag is just horrible.

anybody else having this issue?

Ya, I've always had this problem with DirecTV.

The latest update seem to slow my HR24 when switching in between SD and HD channels.

But upgrading to the HR24 = eliminated all the lag, or most of it.

I would never get an older model, they are all slow as shit

My Time Warner box has the same issue, I just assumed it was the fact that they keep doing huge, sloppy software upgrades, and I'm still using the same shitty scientific atlanta box from 5 or 6 years ago.

My HD DVR has gotten real bad in the last couple months, but it seems to be temp. Here,I can go back 5 min later and it is back to "normal" but it takes up to 2minutes at times for it to respond to any action....I am abot ready to close my account anyways,i have better things to spend my $90 on every month.

I thought I remember reading this has something to do with the time it takes to decompress a stream or something. In other words, it had nothing to do with the remote its just it takes time for the box to convert the stream.

Don't worry, I "upgraded" my old ass SA box to a brand spanking new samsung box, and it's just as slow as ever. It's definitely slow bloated software that's the problem.

Just curious... do the Tivo boxes have annoying remote lag? Because I'm tempted to go with Tivo as my cablebox, so long as the interface isn't slow as hell.

Generally my Tivos are pretty good. Every once in awhile I get the odd 5 seconds to enter the main menu but that is maybe happens 3-4 times a month. My annoyance is DTV has decided they are too old and I should *upgrade* (pfft upgrade the current DVRs suck, parents have one) to a new unit. Starting to get a ton of skips on the locals that is not localized to one machine. Friend of mine has 2 of the same unit and they are skipping/freezing (in sync even, can hear it on the phone while talking to him.) Seems to be something they changed on the stream.

That's the one big knock on DirecTV, slow guide/menu. Lots of delays from one action to another. They need to cut down on all the features people don't use on the guide to help speed it up. Kinda like if you keep adding extensions to firefox it's going to get slower to start up.

It seems to stream all of the data from the satellite.
Going in to System Menus should not be pulling much data from the satellite...

Found this on the directv forums when I was seeing the same thing. Could be placebo, but seemed to work for me:

Clear NVRAM to speed up DVR performance:
Go to channel 1.
Once the page is operating including audio, use the remote and press Red, Red, Blue, Blue, Yellow, Green in exactly that order.
This must be done quickly or the yellow press will bring up a quick options menu.
You win if you see a message about the NVRAM being cleared in the lower left.

There was also one about changing a code on the remote too, that seemed to help as well:

Start by pressing and holding mute first, then select at the same time until the green light on the remote flashes twice, just like any other programming remote step.
Next, press the numbers 9 6 3 and the green light should flash twice again.
Finally, press the "Chan Down" button and the green light should flash twice again.

This disables the model id on the remote, basically meaning the remote doesn't send a sort of verification code of what model of remote it is with each key press that requires the receiver verify it first before processing the command. It just sends the signal straight through, providing faster response time.

This.

Who gives a crap about TV Mail or the last 4 channels I previously was watching? Cut out all the bullshit and make it run smooth.

I have an HR21 and there is a slight lag, but nothing major. I did try out u-verse last year and while the instant channels was nice, they all skipped and paused after 3 visits in the week I had their service. To add to that, they cut a bunch of the coax running through my house, and did strange stuff like remove the hdmi cable coming from my audio receiver and replaced it with component cables. Cancelled it 5 days in and hooked my Dtv box back up.. and then fixed the wiring in the house ATT screwed up. I'll live with the slight lag, I'm not a big channel flipper anyway.

I recently switched from direct to dish to save money. The dish 722 receiver is considerably better about response times.

Thanks, might have to try that.

My HR20-700 goes through periods of slowness then it magically clears up. I now have the latest Verizon FIOS HD-DVR and on the plus side it is very quick responding to the remote, unfortunately the guide and other features suck when compared to DTV in my opinion.

The issue is the update changed a setting or two.

in the menu goto display and make sure scrolling is off,it was turned on by update.

then in video section make sure native is off

the reboot box

Enjoy normal speed again.

I have been having his issue too. Started about 2 months ago. When I change the channel I might as well get up and go do something and when I get back it might be on the channel then. Its only on my HD DVR. The other receivers I have dont do it, just the HD. It has always been a little slow or laggy but its gotten worse and way more annoying.

Why do channel numbers ascend when using the Channel button, but descend in the guide?
Very counter intuitive.

Yes, cable companies are the suck. I got fed up with paying $100+/month for nothing.

fuck Directv. I pay $99 a month and get 0 premium channels.

I'm sick of them. Bill just keeps going up but they don't add any new channels. I was the proud owner of 2 HR20s and 1 HR24, WHDVR, On Demand add in boxes. I used to sing their praises. They can get bent now.

They screwed my brother too, when he left them. He had direct billing with his debit card, when he cancelled, they immediately charged it $700 for return equipment. Then, after they sat on the package for 3 months, they finally reversed the charge. Evil fuckers.

Funny thing. I was doing direct billing via my debit card and then my credit card number was compromised. Bofa cancelled both cards and provided me with new cards. Then Directv started to blow up my wife's phone and mine asking for a new number. Nope, I'll pay you by check now; no way are you getting direct access to one of my accounts anymore.
