Directtv promotion-existing customers, save $10 YMMV

I just called directtv to complain about how high my bill was and they said they had a promotion going that would save me $10 a month for 12 months. So all you have to do is call customer service and tell them you need to lower your bill and ask about any promotions.
It was easy and quick.

should add YMMV to the title ... this isn't a guaranteed thing, BUT if you have no promotions on your account now, you more then likely can get a credit of some kind.

When my credits ran out, I called and asked if they can do anything to reduce the bill as it was getting really expensive (at the time, I had Sunday Ticket and HBO). They ended up giving me a 30 dollar credit for 6 months.

Oh sure, they'll give you the $10 discount, but in doing so you probably just locked yourself in for another 2 year contract. DTV is notorious for those kind of shenanigans.

Discounts like this don't extend your contract.

I've been with DirecTV for over a decade now... More than a few times, I've contacted their retention department and received discounts (similar to the OP's) for a period of time. Never have I had a contract with them, nor have they ever asked me to agree to one.

Cable does same.

BTW does DTV still lag when you change channels?

With DTV, just about anything can extend your contract, even if it's not supposed to. That's one of the reasons a bunch of AG's around the country were/are going after DTV.

I've had DirecTV for close to ten years now, and have been reading forums where stuff like this gets discussed for about that same length of time. I can count on one hand (or maybe even zero hands) the number of people that I've seen have their contracts incorrectly extended because of something like this. To suggest someone shouldn't try to get a discount because of worries about contract extension is just plain ignorant.

I assume you have no newer receivers because they are all leased and require a 2 year commitment when you get them now.

I do... I have two HR20's. Yes they are leased, no I'm not on a contract.

But my hatred of those receivers is growing, so I'm thinking about looking into getting newer models. We'll see if they offer me a contract then. ;)

They wanted $420 bucks to upgrade my receivers to HD so I switched to another company and got HD free and saved about $40.00 bucks a month on my bill to boot.

Huge YMMV.
OP should post that in his title.
Some may get what the OP got but many would get 3 months free Showtime or something in that regard.

I have an HR21 and a HR24, and for a short while had the HR22. Not a huge difference between the three. The HR24 is slightly faster.

Why would they want $420 to change receivers? And who did you go with to save $40/month?

I've shopped around lately, and the difference between the various providers, with comparable plans, seems negligible.

They wanted $420. to upgrade my dvdr receiver and 3 standard receivers to Whole house Hd dvdr service and claimed to be discounting $200 bucks off the regular cost.
I switched to dish and got their dvdr service with 3 Hd receivers for $127 and my monthly bill went from $159 to $117 for the first year. It will go up $15 bucks a month after the first year but will still be less then Direct TV

I asked them at the time if it would change my contract and she said no. I would defiantly double check that with them when you do it to make sure.
