DirectTV plans to castrate OANN and drop the channel

Although they won't say when the existing contract ends...

It would be nice if everyone dropped this bullshit.

This was bound to happen. During my 2020 Summer Learning Online Externship with AT&T, there was emphasis on AT&T's commitment to diversity and inclusion. OANN is the opposite of diversity and inclusion, thus it was not a surprise when I read the thread opener. My real concern however is for AT&T's rival Verizon. Verizon is known not to only just carry OANN, but NewsMax as well. From what I remember, Verizon is slow when making decisions with broadcasting contracts. Further more, Verizon is a lot more business and profit oriented than AT&T is, thus Verizon's 1% more coverage in all of its product markets.

What really does interest me is Charter Spectrum's position in this political mess. Spectrum cable does not carry either OANN or NewsMax, but they carry Black News Channel like Verizon and AT&T do.

The depositions should be easy enough to find if anyone really wanted to:

An OANN accountant said, in testimony collected under oath in 2020, that the bulk of the network's revenue comes from its contract with AT&T-owned TV platforms, including DirecTV. Without the DirecTV deal, the accountant said, the network's value "would be zero," Reuters reported in October 2021.

In a 2019 deposition, also delivered under oath, OANN's founder and chief executive Robert Herring Sr. said that the network was created through the urging of AT&T executives, who reportedly "wanted a conservative network" to rival Fox News.

Multiple reports say April.

Lots of time for the Great Peached Howler to browbeat them into capitulation.

I don't know that he'll have much sway here. He's no longer President, merely yelling at AT&T won't matter much... and I suspect Trump is too much of a skinflint to pay to keep OAN alive.

Me? I'm just hoping Newsmax meets the same fate.

AT&T and much of the corporatocracy are fully two faced. What they say publicly and what they do quietly are entirely different. They SAID they wouldn't donate to those who voted against certification, yet they continued to do so.

I have no doubt the suits will either change this decision openly, or will fund the service through the back door. They will not let this scum swirl down the drain.

Until I read this thread I actually thought OANN was owned by Oprah. Never seen it, so I guess I won't miss it.

I don't think Oprah would have touched OANN with the proverbial ten-foot pole. It represents the polar opposite of her views!

I guess some of you missed this:

This was inevitable, in 2015 when the deal finalized, they let go of alot of the original DTV employees. I was one.

Supervisors were training AT&T ppl to do their jobs, I personally hope they got let go too.

DTV was #1 in customer service satisfaction for like 20 years, until AT&T deal finalized, they last another two years then Dish Network finally got the top hat.

As to the poster in original article claiming DTV was loosing money before the AT7&T deal. They are not well informed. They were making had over fists of cash "DirecTV was making money hand over fist." Happy? I also fixed the 7 for the & symbol.

Along with the executive team led by Mike White who took their Golden Parachutes down to DB Cooper and lived happily ever after.

DirecTV's biggest problem, was there was no career advancement. Either Installer or Management. Nothing else.

The expression is "They (DTV) were making money hand over fist."

And to continue the thought.....after AT&T acquired DTV, DTV lost approx. 8 million US subscribers by 2021. Sad.

Figures OAN was popular on DTV, since a major portion of their subscribers subscribership are people in the sticks.

AT&T's acquisition binge in the mid teens turned into just torching shareholder value. Something like $100B in failed deals.
