Directly connecting Windows XP computers

Hello folks. I am a complete networking n00b in need of some help. I just pieced together my new system, and I want to transfer my files over from my old setup by some other means than CDRW, as it is terribly time consuming. Could someone show me, step by step, how to connect directly using crossover cable and link the two machines?
