In order to take advantage of watching one channel while recording one, your Tivo box has to have two tunners. What that means is that it has to have TWO sat inputs, and if it does, then you would need two lines in. Most of the Tivo nowadays only has one sat input, which means you can only record what you are watching.

I highly recommend getting a Two Tuner DVR. You don't know what you are missing until you get one.
