Question Directional wifi between buildings

Scarpozzi

Lifer
I own a few houses and a picnic shelter by a lake that's like 20x30' where I used to throw parties. I'm going to look at doing some renovations on one of the houses, but would like to come up with a wireless solution. The houses are small, so one access point per building will work. The houses are about 130' apart. The picnic shelter by the lake is 300' away.

How should I try to hook these all up so they share one cable modem?

Ubiquiti has some point to point wifi products you should look at.

Would probably run a couple of hundred bucks total.

I've seen some of their stuff. I've got a timeshare with 3 bedroom hotel-style units that has 4 different buildings for guest rooms. The clubhouse sits between the 4 buildings and has these little directional antennas that shoot a signal to the buildings. It works alright, but it's probably 2.4Ghz and less distance that the big hop down the hill to the lake. Positioning the antennas right will be crucial to guarantee line of sight due to trees.

I'll see what I can find and make sure the specifications will like up. You know how it is though...specification claims aren't always accurate with that stuff.

Or UniFi AC Mesh.

I may have to look at cheaper options, but would be nice to setup surveillance and maybe even automation out there one of these days too. I need to take squirrels into consideration too on the wiring. I had a bunch of side lights they they like chewing on plastic cords/cat5/speaker wires/etc..those bastards.

You would need to look at access points that have externally replaceable antennas and look into getting directional antenna. The products like ubiquiti posted above should work very well and have good support. They would be what I would recommend if you are looking for some kind of guaranteed service level. But if you are just trying to do it for yourself and don’t mind tinkering, getting a couple panel antennas like an Alfa APA-M25 a compatible WiFi router and good line of sight between the locations, you can usually extend the WiFi network a couple hundred feet without issues.
