Do retail AMD fans blow onto or suck away from the heatsink?
I have a 1900+ Palomino if that makes any difference.
I'm thinking of getting a 60mm -> 80mm adapter and an 80mm fan to improve cooling, would this be possible to do without removing the HS/F assembly, because I want to do something simple to improve the cooling, and that doesn't involve removing the HS.

You should be able to remove the fan without disturbing the HS.

As for blowing or sucking, try it both ways with your new fan and see which way cools better.

I don't have any stock HSF/HS layign around to see which way the "default" is.

I too have an xp 1900+ (i'm sure palamino, its been awhile)
I've had to screw around with the fan enough times, the stock fan I have blows.

Most heatsinks do better with the fan blowing onto them. The few that don't include some of the Alpha PAL's.

Using those 60-80mm adapters don't usually work unless you pushing a LOT of air through them. The increased turbulence/back-pressure that happens when you use a narrowing adapter can actually cause your temperatures to rise.
